Michael Gizzi Obituary
Monday, September 27, in his home in Providence.
He was born in 1949 in Schenectady, NY to Carolyn B. and Anthony J. Gizzi. He received his BA and MFA from Brown University.
For years he worked as a tree surgeon before moving in the early 1980s to western Massachusetts. He taught for several years at Lenox High and later returned to Providence to teach at Roger Williams College and Brown University.
He was the author of more than ten books of poetry, including Bird As, Avis, Species of Intoxication, Continental Harmony, My Terza Rima and New Depths of Deadpan. He also worked as an editor with Hard Press and Qua Books.
He is survived by his daughter Pilar and grandson Hollis of Portland, Maine, his brothers Thomas and Peter, and his former wives Ippy Patterson and Barbieo Barros-Gizzi.
A memorial service will be held next spring near Jamestown. In lieu of flowers, tax-deductible contributions may be made to Anyart (71 Elmgrove Avenue, RI 02906) or the Poetry Project (131 E. 10th St., New York, NY 10003).

Dear Family of Michael Gizzi,
We were saddened to learn of Michael's death. We are The Compassionate Friends of Providence, a support group to help families---parents, grandparents and siblings --- with the death of a child. If you would like to get in touch with us, we can be reached at: www.tcfprovidence.com.
My son Cameron was killed in an auto accident thirteen years ago and this wonderful group has helped me immeasurably.

My condolences to the Gizzi family, and those he cherished throughout his always exciting and interesting life.
I haven't seen Mike since the late 70's when we worked together at American Tree. It never seemed like work, in the presence of such fine people as Mike and the Sweet family. It was always an adventure, -something Mike always turned a task into. And now he leaves us to start a new adventure. I have great memories of this fine friend. He was a true gentleman, who made this world a better place to live.
