Paul Weisz Obituary

WEISZ, PAUL B., PH.D., Professor Emeritus Brown University, age 83, 355 Blackstone Blvd., Providence, RI. Born in Vienna, Austria 1921, passed away on January 26, 2005. He was the loving husband of Lillian; son of Stephanie Mose and Samuel Weisz; and brother of Ruth. Dr. Weisz was the author of numerous college texts in Biology, Botany and Zoology published by McGraw-Hill and used all over the world.

Dr. Weisz was the sole holocaust survivor of his immediate family. At age 19 after escaping to England, he was transported in 1940 as an alien refugee to Montreal, Canada where he spent the next year and a half at an internment camp at Fort Lennox outside of Montreal. While there, Paul taught himself English, earned the sponsorship of Dr. Harold Segall, a noted heart surgeon from Montreal, and was accepted at McGill University, earning his BS in 1943. In 1945 Paul married Lillian Brown of Montreal and in 1946 received his doctorate in Biology from McGill. In 1947 Dr. N.J. Berrill of Brown University invited Dr. Weisz to join the Biology Department. Since then Paul and Lillian have been residents of Providence where they raised their family.

Besides his wife, Dr. Weisz leaves daughters Stephanie, Sherye and son, Peter; their spouses; grandchildren Leah, Rachel, Samuel, Ruth, Sarah, William and Joshua; and great grandchild, Lilly - all of whom will miss him very much but will remember his achievements and perseverance in the face of adversity and hostile times.

A memorial service will be held in the spring. The family requests donations to the Alzheimer's organization of your own choosing or the Philip Hulitar Home & Hospice Care of RI. Arrangements through SUGARMAN-SINAI MEMORIAL CHAPEL.

Dear Mrs. Weisz,

My deepest sympathies of the death of your husband. I have such fond memories of both you and your husband from my time working at Laurelmead. I worked closely with your husband on "Laurelmead College" and learned so much from him and grew to have a great respect for him. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Love, Dawn Larsson Kelly
