RYTER, RICHARD J. "DICK", MD
We honor and celebrate the inspirational life of Dr. Richard Joseph Ryter, a devoted husband, strong father, unfailing brother, and vibrant grandfather. Dick passed away peacefully on November 13, 2017 surrounded by his loving family. He was a resident of Cranston, Rhode Island and Green Hill, Rhode Island.
Dick was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1947 to Mary and Joseph F. Ryter, their only son, and second of four children.
He was a graduate of College of the Holy Cross and Cornell University Medical College and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University Hospitals of Cleveland, and Case Western Reserve University Hospitals. Dick was honored with an appointment to Chief Resident, before establishing his private practice in Rhode Island. Dick and his wife Marcia enjoyed 37 years of marriage. In East Greenwich, Rhode Island, they raised two children, Amy and Jay, and in the last two years had found extreme joy in their grandson, Jack. He and his family enjoyed travel, sailing, and spending their summers together at the beach.
Dick is survived by his wife, Marcia. As well as their daughter Amelia and her husband Mark Nihill, and their son Jack. Dick is also survived by his sisters and their husbands, Roberta and John Heffernan of Old Saybrook, Patricia and David O'Connell of Simsbury, and Kathryn and the Late Jack Costelloe of Old Lyme. It's still hard for me to believe he is gone...Being an employee for Dr. Ryter was a dream..I always felt like he was not only my boss, but a good friend.
No matter the situation...I always felt like I could speak with him.
Dr. Ryter, I'm sure, overheard a lot of "juicy" conversations from us...He was so quiet, all of a sudden, there he was!
I know this sounds weird, but he had this one pair of shoes that squeeked..so we knew he was close...:)
I finally told him one day, that if really wanted to overhear "the good stuff", he needed to get rid of those shoes..:)
Thank you, Marcia and family for sharing him...I hope you don't mind, but I still keep a little piece of him in my heart!

I miss Dr.Ryter. I think of him often. Dick was my primary care physician, also my friend and confidant. We shared many stories about out lives. He was truly a brilliant man and proficient at many skills. When we were setting up his pre Coastal Medical office in Harmony, RI; I wanted to install an overhead music sound system in the office. Although we did not have the funds to do what I proposed. He told me that he knew of a way to do that cheaply. So he connected the speakers that I bought to a small radio and it worked great! It was a simple thing, but I was very pleased and impressed by that. Ron Girouard

Dick was my primary care physician and my friend. I very much miss is attention to my healthcare needs and the personal chit-chats we had during my visits. I had the pleasure to work with Dick to setup the Harmony office when we developed a trusting friendship as well. Dr Ryter was a great guy and I think of him often. Ron Girouard

Marsha, Amy and family,
Not a day goes by that Dr. Ryter isnt in our thoughts. Not only did he save my father's and grandfather's lives but my mother, Robin, was also his M.A. for 24 years. He wasnt just her boss, Dr. Ryter was a friend to our family. Whether it was coming to a family shower or wedding, the Ryter family was always there. Thank you for sharing him with us all. Dr. Ryter was a genuinely amazing man. Absolutely loved his family and was always chatting about Jack and how quickly he was growing up. You are all in our prayers on a daily basis. We hope you are all safe and healthy through this crazy time.

Dr Ryder was an excellent doctor. I owe my life to him for an early lung cancer diagnosis. I am sure my previous doctor would have missed the tumor. I was diagnosed with pneumonia and after the antibiotics felt fine, but Dr Ryder sent me back for a follow-up xray just to be sure. It revealed stage 1 lung cancer. When I thanked him for saving my life, he modestly replied "Sometimes you get lucky." I had invited him out on my sailboat after my surgery, but our schedules kept conflicting. So sorry to see him pass.

Dear Martha and family,
I am so very sorry for you loss. Dr Ryter was a kind, devoted doctor and a wonderful person. Like you all must be, I still feel very much in shock, does not seem real. They say that God takes the best and that is what he was. At the end of each workday, he would always say thank you and made you feel as if you made a difference. I was truly honored to work for him and so honored that he choose me to be on his team. May you all know that he will be with you everyday, until you meet again. May God bless you all and know that he will always be your special angel to guide and watch over you all-especially little Jack. God bless you all, and may Dr Ryter rest in peace.
With sincere sympathy and love,
Janice and John Fabiano

To The Family of Dr. Ryter:

It is with deep sadness that I learn about Dr. Ryter's passing. For decades, he was a knowledgeable, caring physician who took wonderful care of my husband, the late James Moniz, and me. When it came to internists, he was simply the best; we could always count on him for his sound advice and compassion.

My thoughts are with your entire family at this difficult time. Please know the impact that Dr. Ryter had on so many lives. His legacy will live on.

November 25, 2017

Dear Mrs. Ryter & family, I am so saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. Richard Ryter. I heard he was ill and would be out of the office. I went to the office on Nov.15 and spoke with Robin. She informed me that Dr. Ryter had passed away. I am shocked and heart broken over this news. I have been his patient for 40 years and will miss him tremendously!! I will never find another doctor with his knowledge, mannerism and truly caring of his patients.
Most sincerely,
Caroline Pompeii

I was very saddened to learn of Dr. Ryter's passing..

He was an attending physician when I was an impressionable Brown medical student.

His statuesque presence, and calm teaching demeanor served as a role model for us all.

I know that we are all better physicians for his tutelage...and for that we will always be grateful...

Dr Ryter saved my life. I had pneumonia and was treated at a hospital. I felt fine afterwards, but Dr Ryter insisted on a follow-up xray. He found I had lung cancer. Because it was discovered at an early stage, I was able to make a full recovery. I am quite confident my previous doctor would have done nothing and I would be dead by now. He was a great and kind man. I will always remember him. My deepest condolences.

My husband and I were so deeply grieved to receive word of Dr. Ryter's sudden passing. Please know that your family and his extended family at Coastal Medical are in our prayers and thoughts during this sorrowful time. We hope you find peace and comfort in the difficult days yet to come.

Dr. Ryter has been our primary care physician since the very beginning and his compassion and willingness to listen was what made him a friend as well as our physician. He would engage in conversation and welcomed us as part of his family and community. Our thoughts mattered, our laughter mattered, our tears mattered...and most of all our health mattered. There really is no single word to describe his brilliance and greatness. Humble yet confident. We will forever cherish knowing Dr. Ryter and will always have the highest degree of respect for him.

We will honor his legacy by following the path way he so generously carved out for us. He passionately immersed his whole life into his selfless contribution to humanity. He was a gift to all who knew him. We will miss him dearly.

I am so saddened to learn today that my doctor has fallen asleep in death. I wish I could of personally been at the wake to give my condolences to all of Dr. Ryter's family and friends. He not only was an outstanding doctor but was a outstanding man who I had the honor and privilege to be one of his patients, he was like family. He really cared for you and spent as much time necessary to care for your needs. I moved to Seekonk and was so glad I could still keep him as my doctor. The last time I spoke to him at his office he was so happy to tell me that he was going to Europe on vacation. I'm so glad he was able to do that and I'm sure his wife will cherish those memories. I pray that God will comfort the family at this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I was his patient and friend for 35 or more years and always depended on him to give the right treatment or advise. He came to my home after his very full day of treating patients to care for my son when he was dying. We had a bond like no other because we both lost our sons around the same time. Every time I saw him he smiled and told me about his adored Jack. So glad he had this wonderful experience with him. Rest in peace my dear friend.

My mother, Robin, has been Dr. Ryter's medical assistant for almost 24 years. He was not only her boss but also a great friend. My children and family would love to stop in to the office and see his smiling face. He always made time to say hi to us and ask the kids how things were going. He just had the biggest heart and I know he lived for his family. Dr. Ryter would share videos of Jack and would just light up whenever talking about him.
