Robert Carnevale Obituary

CARNEVALE, ROBERT A., M.D. Late Friday night, Dr. Robert Carnevale passed away surrounded by his family at Rhode Island Hospital. Fifty years earlier, as a teenager, he had his first job sweeping the hospital floors. His son Joseph, now a third year Brown medical student, walks these same halls as he visits patients during rounds. Dr. Carnevale was a cardiologist, a teacher, a storyteller, an explorer, a comedian, an historian but above all else a husband, father, grandfather, brother, son, and friend. He was born, raised, and educated in Providence. He attended Classical High School and Providence College, before studying medicine at New York Medical College. In 1975, he returned to RI for an Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology fellowship at Rhode Island Hospital. From the earliest stages of his exposure to medicine he had a passion for direct patient care. In 1980, along with his wife Joanne and Cheryl McVay, he built a health practice in the Elmhurst section of Providence, which was unique in that it focused on primary care and cardiology. As a pioneer in echocardiography, he traveled the world learning and teaching the latest technologies in cardiac imaging. As a clinical associate professor of medicine at Brown University, Dr. Carnevale devoted his time to educating medical students, sonographers, residents, and fellows in the art of medicine. In 1995, together with friends and colleagues, Robert was involved in the creation of a new concept in care, a group practice but without walls. The practice was called Coastal Medical, where Dr. Carnevale served for many years as a founder, treasurer, chairman of the finance committee, and later medical director. In 2014, he was awarded the Irving Addison Beck Memorial Award from the American College of Physicians. Today, he is known to all as a teacher of those who wish to learn, an impassioned caregiver to patients, but overall a community physician who loved his patients like his family and would go above and beyond for them - no phone call was too late, no visit too far. Dr. Robert Carnevale is survived by his wife of 36 years Joanne, his four children Kerri, Jessie, Bobby, and Joey, two grandchildren Peter and Charlotte, his mother and father Angelo and Anna, his uncle and aunt Henry and Sheila, brothers and sister Frank, Tom, and Mary-Ellen. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 1, 2015 at 10AM in St. Augustine Church, Mt. Pleasant Ave., Providence. Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, June 30, 2015 at Russell J. Boyle & Son Funeral Home, 331 Smith Street, Providence, from 4-8 PM. Burial will be private. Donations can be made in his name to Brown Medical Annual Fund. http://www.brown.edu/academics/medical/about/giving/Inline. boyleandsonfuneralhome.com

To the Carnevale family, I only just now found out Dr C had passed. I am so saddened. He was an amazing man, Dr, and all around friend. I considered myself very lucky to have found him and recommended him to all who needed his help. He ,unlike many today continued to look until he found the answers he wanted. He will be in my thoughts and prayers always.

I am deeply saddened to hear that Dr. C has gone to heaven. An amazing doctor and friend to his patients; my husband Frank lived many years beyond expections because of Dr. C's amazing understanding of Frank's way of living and so gave hime the quality of life he desired. A rare physician who treated us all like family. Prayers to Joanne and family.

Just learned of Dr C's passing. There are no words that will make his passing ok. I was a patient of his for over 25 years and he was an extraordinary medical practitioner. He really cared about each of his patients in a way that will be so hard to find in another provider. I offer my condolences to his family and friends. He will sorely be missed. Just learned of dr. C's death. He was by far the most compassionate dr.i have known. He cared for my mother for about 30 years and she loved him dearly. He was at her bedside in hospice talking to her and holding her hand. She passed the next day very peacefully and we, her family, were so grateful to dr. C for that visit. My sincere condolences to his entire family and co-workers at coastal-especially leslie-as the loss of this magnificent man will be greatly felt.

July 6, 2015

I would like to offer my sincere condolences to Mrs. Joanne Carnevale and family. I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Doctor C as I affectionately called him. I was a patient of his for many years and credit him for saving my life. He once said to me very candidly Artie do you want to live or die? Naturally, I said I wanted to live, and he smiled and said then you have to change your ways, and of course with his coaching I did. I will miss Doctor C very much. I always asked about him every time I visited the Coastal Medical Office at 1075 Smith Street. Dr. C was a contemporary of mine. He attended Classical High School, and I attended Hope High School. Only my closest friends call me Artie, and that is how Dr. C referred to me. I was so impressed whenever I was hospitalized and I would suddenly wake up and there was Dr. C, with his warm smile, always making me feel better. I sent a a get well card, and he took the time to send me a reply with a long note, inquiring about my health. Dr. C was truly one of a kind, and believe me I have nothing but the best team of Doctors I could assemble, but no one was quite like him. Joanne I know this does not ease the pain any for your tremendous loss, but I want you to know that your HUSBAND and my DOCTOR made a difference in my life. I am very healthy these days, and I owe a great deal of this to Dr. C. He was truly a Gentleman and a very compassionate man, and had such a wonderful bedside manner. I am going to miss my doctor, and my friend. May he rest in peace, and may the peace of the Lord always be with you and your family.

Bob and I became friendly as Freshman Biology majors at PC and as co-workers as orderlies in the RIH operating room throughout college. It was obvious early on that Bob would become a physician. He has also been my primary care physician since he started his practice. As a student and as a physician, Bob liked to be challenged. My wife was not feeling well and her doctors could not determine what was wrong. At the time Bob's practice was not accepting new patients, but when I told him her doctors were perplexed, he agreed to see her. Needless to say, Bob ran some tests and did some research and was able to diagnose her condition as a relatively rare autoimmune disease. He referred her to a specialist in the field and continued to be her primary care physician. Bob was a caring and humble man, a good friend and a doctor's doctor. He will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with him, Joanne and their family.

This brilliant gentlemen has helped so many people, and will never be forgotten. May your family find some comfort and peace knowing he is at peace with Our Lord.

Not surprised to see all of the wonderful expressions of sympathy for Dr C - he was truly one of a kind. I've been his patient for about 30 years and will always remember his caring nature and his words during my ups and downs in life. And the phone calls to checkup when he knew I went into urgent care to see if I was ok. I'm so glad that I had the opportunity to talk with him live the beginning of this year to hear his voice and to get his advice on which doctor should now be my primary physician - I will cherish that call always which was to be the last. My deepest sympathy to his family and staff who I know will miss him dearly, as I will.

I will never forget the doctor who upon returning to practice after his own illness and learning of my husband's (his patient) diagnosis of cancer, called me and asked for directions to my home so that he could visit and comfort both my husband and myself. My husband died four days later knowing that his doctor had also been a concerned friend.

Thomas Bruzzese

June 30, 2015

I never had the privilege of meeting Dr. Carnevale; although I feel like I knew him. This is because he was my Dad and my Dad's wife primary care physician for many years. I would always hear them speak so highly of the Doctor after each visit. Due to this, I am not surprised to read the beautiful memories and wonderful comments that others have expressed. My brother who is also physician trained under the Doctor at RI Hospital and learned a lot from him. My Dad is now 94. His long life and the quality of his life are a blessing, and I know that the Doctor had a lot to do with that. May his noble soul now rest in peace, as he goes to his eternal dwelling place with the Divine Physician, Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Our condolences to all the Carnevale family, especially to you Joanne. Bob was a kind and caring friend and an amazing doctor. We hit it off instantly from our first meeting at PC (we were both "dayhop" bio majors.) Friendship grew to the point where I asked him to be the Best Man at my wedding. I have, to this day, never met anyone more determined to be a doctor AND to return to his hometown to establish his practice. He'd did that and so much more! I shall miss you, my old friend. Rest in Peace.

With profound sadness I learned about Bob's passing. Every time I approached Bob a smile formed on my face and we would exchange humorous or nonsensical words before we got down to serious business (or we never did down to seriousness). To the Carnevale Family,

I'm terribly sorry for the loss of your loved one and my friend. I originally knew Dr. Carnevale casually via Coastal Medical, as I was their banker back then. When my son died suddenly, Dr. Carnevale reached out to me in a way that was more than casual; he was truly saddened and took the time to write a heartfelt letter of condolence.

It was then that I really knew what a kind and compassionate man he was, and I now know what you have lost in his passing.

I'll remember Dr. Carnevale fondly and keep him and all of you in my prayers.
