Jim,
I received an e-mail yesterday with the news that Bob had passed away. I want to express my deepest sympathy to both you and all of Bob's family. I will always remember Bobby as the person with a smile on his face and his love for life. I recently had the opportunity to speak with Bob after many years and I could tell he had not changed. He laughed and joked as he always did and spoke of how proud he was of his family. Bobby was a good friend to me when I needed a good friend in my life and I will always appreciate him for that.

I just learned of Bobby Doyle's passing and I wanted to extend my sympathies to his family. I, too, was a competitive distance runner in the 1980's and Bobby Doyle was a tremendous source of inspiration. Regular visits to Doyle's Sporting Goods provided opportunities to talk running and I enjoyed every visit. The news saddens me but his memory will remain strong in those who he touched.

Lori,Pat,Buzz and family,

I would like to extend my deepest sympathies to the Doyle fmaily for the loss of Coach. He was a PROFESSIONAL in and out of running. His unselfishness reflected in his coaching style. Coach would never stop teaching different strategies or giving encouragement. He gave encouragement to every runner, whether it was his own team of participants from other schools. He instilled that the sport of running is based on individual achievement while emphasizing team concept.
Coach always had time for his athletes. It may have come on Sunday mornings racing 10miles from the Doyle household and eating Lori's famous delicious pancakes. Or allowing us to stop by or call to discuss events which his athletes participated in.
He was an inspiration, role model, mentor and a friend. Thank you for your dedication to the sport. You will be missed by all.

I ran my first marathon at Ocean State 1976 when Bobby won the first of his seven victories at Newport. I knew nothing about him before that cold, blustery day. But, much like Bill Rodgers, both "Everyman" type athletes, Bobby inspired, enthused and excited me about our sport.
He was a fierce, gritty competitor who asked no quarter and gave none in his pursuit of the finish line. Yet, outside competition, he was a kind, gentle, decent man who lived and loved life to the fullest. I am deeply saddened by his untimely demise.
Over time, I came to know the entire Doyle family and recount my every encounter with everyone a pure pleasure.
I express my sincere, heartfelt condolences.

Bobby was truly a running legend in New England. His work ethic, love of the sport and desire to succeed made him an exceptional runner. He touched so many and will continue to influence us through his life’s stories. Bobby will continue to inspire us all…

He will be truly missed, but never forgotten.

Deepest Sympathies,

Dear Doyle Family -
Although we never met Bobby, we were introduced to your family through Brendan. Our daughter, Jess, told us how Bobby would be at Brendan's side day and night, and never gave up hope for a full recovery. With that type of devotion, I'm not surprised at all the accolades being written about Bobby.

During this most difficult time, please accept our prayers and thoughts for all the Doyles. My God bless you and being you peace.

I was so saddened to hear about Bobby. Aside from his running achievements Bobby was a great person. He and Jimmy and Debbie were always so helpful to me back in the 80's, that I can only try to be as helpful to others. My consolences to all the Doyle family.

December 17, 2007

Dear Doyle Family,
Our families are remembering your family in our prayers. Growing up in large "running" families from Cumberland, some of our fondest memories are of the Arnold Mills 4th of July Road Races, The Blessing of the Fleet, The Ocean State Marathons, and The 1980 Olympic Marathon Trials. Bobby was an ever-present, highly respected talent who left both his competition and the spectators awe-inspired. His work ethic, courage, love of running, and love for his family are his legacy. Wishing you peace.
Sincerely,
The Malachowski and Grundy Families

Doyle family:
My sympathies on the passing of Bobby. I was lucky enough to consider myself a friend-in-law as a result of training with Hollie over the years. I recall calculating Bobby's per mile pace after his 2:14 in Boston while a student at Cranston East in 1979 and then struggling to complete two miles at that pace.
He will be missed but has left quite a legacy for all his children and athletes to be proud. Stay strong.

Brendan, Pat, Brian, Connor, McKenzie,Lori and the Doyle family, I want you to know you are all in my thoughts and prayers during this time. May god be with you all and give you the strength to get through. My last memories of uncle bobby was at RI hospital, him watching over Buzzys bedside day by day. I would think to myself, what a wonderful father he was. I remember sitting next to him in those uncomfortable hospital chairs and seeing how happy he would get when the nurse would come out and tell us his son had given the thumbs up. I am so glad that i was able to share that time with him. We now have a beautiful angel watching over us. I truly am sorry for your loss, I love you all and God Bless.

My deepest sympathies go out to the entire Doyle family on the loss of Robert.
My late father (Albert Drapeau) started running marathons at around 50 years old. On several occasions, he ran along side with "Bobby". I also have a brother and a sister that were marathon runners. For some time, they were all frequent customers of the Pawtucket store, not just to buy running shoes - but for friendly advice.
There is something about a marathon runner that can inspire each of us - no matter what the circumstances, to endure. That is a lesson that stays with us forever. May the many memories you have bring you comfort in the days ahead. "Bobby" will be missed by many.
