Robert E. Hanke Sr.

HANKE, ROBERT E., SR.
94, of Olde Buttonwoods, Warwick, died on July 18, 2021. He was the husband of Helena (Cepek) Hanke to whom he had been married for 68 years. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Ernst E. Hanke, Sr. and Mary (Halpin) Hanke. A World War II veteran, Bob served in Europe with the 9th Air Force. Upon discharge he attended Rhode Island State College (now University of Rhode Island) and graduated from Boston University School of Law, class of 1952. He was admitted to the Bar that year. Bob worked with the Legal Aid Society and later joined Amica where he spent a career, retiring as Senior Vice President responsible for Amica's claims operation. While with Amica he served on the boards of several national insurance organizations. He also worked with many local civic and charitable organizations. During retirement, Bob and Helena enjoyed their annual fall motor trips to the southwest and wintered on their beloved Jekyll Island, Georgia. In addition to his wife, Bob is survived by his children Diane M. Hanke (Neal Cerel), Robert E. Hanke, Jr. (Susan), and Martha J. Valletta (Vincent); his grandchildren Sara Szerlag, Bethany Drew and Bradley Valletta, Kurt, Elizabeth, Thomas and Catherine Hanke all of Warwick and six great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Ernst E. Hanke, Jr. He was fond of saying that he owed his long and successful life to the love of a good woman and loving family. At Bob's request there will be no viewing. Services are private.
