Ruth Simmons Obituary

SIMMONS, RUTH (BLAISDELL) 89, of Barrington and Edgartown, Massachusetts, died at home January 2. She was survived by her husband of 69 years, Sumner E. Simmons and by her daughters, Ellen Simmons of Providence and Marcia Brown of Lincoln, and by her grandchildren, Emily and Ian Brown. She was the mother of the late David B. Simmons. Born in Cranston, the daughter of Sidney Blaisdell and Eleanor (Platt) Blaisdell, she was a graduate of Hope High and Lasell College. Ruth was an active volunteer with many organizations, including the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, Meals on Wheels, R.I. Audubon Society and the Barrington Congregational Church. Her quiet opposition to the Vietnam War earned her a place on Nixon's "enemies" list, of which she was very proud. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Saturday, January 25 at the Hope Club in Providence at 12:00 noon. Internment will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Home and Hospice Care of Rhode Island. Condolences may be left at monahandrabblesherman.com

To know Ruth was to love her and I feel honored to have known her. My heart is broken and shares in your insurmountable grief at the loss of her. I send my deepest sympathy to your family, friends and all those that loved her. Loss is never easy, and although we often struggle in searching for reasons, our loved ones presence will forever live on in our treasured moments shared, where we find comfort in their memory.

Upon my first meeting Ruth through personal home care, she greeted me with such a sweet smile that I will never forget. I told her upon leaving that she was cool and she laughed and said, (wow, that is a cool compliment). We had not seen one another for a few months and then reunited recently which made me very happy as I had often thought of her during our time apart. She stated the same, which made me cry. We got along famously and always had great visits discussing all types of things. I especially enjoyed hearing her surprising knowledge on pop culture (e.g. Miley Cyrus etc. - too funny). Everyone who has had the privilege to meet this strong yet the gentlest of women can all agree what a beautiful individual she was and how thankful they were to know her. She radiated joy; she brought friendship, smiles and beauty to everyone who was around her. It is an honor to say she is my friend. How tragic it is to lose her and the personal joy that she brought to each of us who know, liked or loved her. My heart goes out to all of you, and is broken for all of us.

We who loved Ruth are bound together by that love…a special group who loved a very special woman.

Ruth will forever be in my thoughts, held close to my heart. A precious presence I will never forget. May we each find a little more strength, understanding, and acceptance with each day that passes. May we each find healing in our hearts and minds, and may Ruth rest in eternal peace.

Ruth, your beautiful contribution to this life will forever inspire us to carry on your capacity to love. We will honor you always in reflection of compassion, generosity, humor and sensitivity. oXo
