Richard Eigenbrode Obituary

Mr. Richard D. "Dick" Eigenbrode, 75, a resident of Menno-Haven, Chambersburg and formerly of 11575 Country Club Road, Waynesboro, PA entered into eternal rest at 6:30 P.M. Tuesday, December 15, 2009 with his family at his side. He was born on December 28, 1933 on Gehr Road in Washington Township of Franklin County, PA; he was the son of the late Mark Daniel Eigenbrode and Olive (Flohr) Eigenbrode. He lived all his life in the Waynesboro area. Mr. Eigenbrode graduated from Washington Township High School with the class of 1951, where he served as class president. In his senior year of high school football, he made All Laural Conference tackle. He later received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Shippensburg State Teachers College in Shippensburg, PA, and later did graduate work at Western Maryland University and University of Maryland. Dick served in the United States Army, serving during the Vietnam Conflict. He and his wife, Mrs. Joann G. (Greenawalt) Eigenbrode were married September 13, 1968 in Waynesboro. They moved to the present residence in 1989. Dick worked on a farm in his early life, then worked at Landis Tool Company, Waynesboro and then worked for George Fuller Construction Company, building under ground pentagon. He taught school from 1955 through 1956 and again from 1958 through 1960 in Washington County, Maryland. From 1960 through 1966 he taught school for the Waynesboro School District. Dick worked for the Falling Spring Corporation for three years (Howard Johnson), Porter Associates at the Holiday Inn in Chambersburg, Hagerstown and Martinsburg, WV for seven years. He and his wife purchased the Best Western of Waynesboro and built the Hoover House Restaurant in Waynesboro. They sold the business in 1989. He continued farming after retirement on the farm on Amsterdam Road, later purchasing a farm on the Country Club Road both in Waynesboro. He bred, raised and raced Thoroughbred Horses, winning over 50 races in the tri-state area. Mr. Eigenbrode was a member of Otterbein Church, Waynesboro; MD Horse Breeders Association; PA Horse Breeders Association; West Virginia Racing Association; Greater Waynesboro Chamber of Commerce; W.I.D.C. of Waynesboro; was founder of Franklin County Motel Association; member of Owls Club; PA Farmers Association; Franklin County Farmers Association, and B.P.O. Elks. Dick served on Waynesboro School Board for four years; Washington Township Board of Supervisors for 18 years, including several as chairman of board; Washington Township Municipal Authority; Republican Committee Person; Board of Directors for Citizen's National Bank for many years; Best Western Board of Governors in Phoenix, AZ for eight years and the Waynesboro Hospital Board of Directors. He was also awarded Innkeeper of the year in 1976 from Holiday Inns Worldwide. In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children, Daniel Eigenbrode of Frederick, MD; Richard Eigenbrode of Blue Ridge Summit, PA; Debra Elbin of Chambersburg; Donna Riggs of Corbin, KY; Kristina Whalen of Harleysville, PA, two step-children, Robert Pryor of Hagerstown; Kathy Pryor of Waynesboro, eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one sister, Barale Royer of Harrisburg, PA, two brothers, Mark Eigenbrode of McConnellsburg, PA; William Eigenbrode of Palatine, IL, and a number of nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a step-mother, Susan (Schwinger) Eigenbrode. Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, December 19, 2009 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad Street, Waynesboro with Rev. John S. Mullen officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro. Family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. Friday in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: The Lunch Place, 100 S. Dearest Joann,
I'm so loss for word when I heard Dick passed. I didn't even know he was in a nurseing home. He was a man I truely admired. So sorry for the loss. My thoughts & Prayers will be with the family.
In God's Love & Grace he will be with you during these hard times.
