Walter Rhodes Obituary

Walter E. "Sonny" Rhodes, 69, of St. Thomas, PA passed away Sunday, December 5th, 2010 at his residence.

Walter was born in McConnellsburg, PA on June 3, 1941, the son of the late Robert H. and Margaret E. (Gordon) Rhodes. He was the husband of Edith B. (Mellott) Barnett Rhodes whom he married in June, 1997.

Mr. Rhodes was of the Protestant faith, served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, worked at Mellott's Sawmill in Chambersburg, PA for most of his life and retired from T.B. Woods in Chambersburg, PA in 2005
In addition to his wife, he is survived by Sons Brian K. Rhodes of Greencastle, PA, Corey G. Rhodes of St. Thomas, PA, Daughter Amanda R. Rhodes Shields of Chambersburg, PA, Step-Daughter Yolanda Barnett Ramsey of Needmore, PA, Step-Sons Harty E. Barnett of Harrisonville, PA, Travis L. Barnett of Chambersburg, PA, Sisters Cindy Skiles of McConnellsburg, PA, Patricia Barnhart of McConnellsburg, PA, Brothers Donald E. Rhodes of McConnellsburg, PA,
Clifford R. Rhodes of McConnellsburg, PA, Norman R. Rhodes of Chambersburg, PA, Russell Dean Rhodes of Chambersburg, PA, Grandchildren Brian Damien Rhodes, Sarah E. Rhodes, Noah G. Rhodes, Logan C. Mroz, Keaton Rhodes, Step-grandchildren Tamara D. Skiles, Caleb H. Barnett, Quintin Remsburg, Ashley, Cody, Emily, Step-great grandchildren Dakota L. Gordon and Destiny D. Lynch. Preceded in death by his first wife Janice M. (Helman) Rhodes who passed away in June, 1996, brother Cletus Rhodes and step-great grandson Dalton M. Skiles.

Religious Service at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Inc., 873 Lincoln Way East, McConnellsburg, PA, at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 8th, 2010 with Pastor Deborah Strait officiating. Military services will be conducted by the Fulton Honor Guard.

Interment will be private at the convenience of the Family.

There will be visitation on Tuesday, December 7th, 2010 from 2 P.M. to 8 P.M. with the family receiving friends from 6 P.M. to 8 P.M. at Howard L. Sipes Funeral Home, Inc., McConnellsburg, PA. There will also be visitation one hour before the service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in memory of Walter to the Lutheran Home Care & Hospice, 2700 Lutheran Drive, Chambersburg, PA 17201.

DAD, You are the best. I know we had are hard times but when I needed you , you where there. You are a special dad. When Noah and Logan ask for you, I will tell them your with mom watching over them. I have many memories of Sonny doing work for my mom (Ruth Helman) around our home in Fort Loudon. Sonny was a great handy man and could fix just about anything. I count myself fortunate to have had him in our family. My thoughts and prayers are with his entire family.
