Jane Spencer Obituary

Jane Ann (Wehrle) Spencer, 82, of Punxsutawney, passed away on Friday, Aug. 5, 2022, at Punxsutawney Area Hospital.
She was born in Punxsutawney on April 10, 1940, a daughter of the late Francis Eugene "Pete" Wehrle and Estella Grace (Huey) Wehrle.
Following high school, Jane continued her education in the field of psychology.
On May 10, 1962, she married her teenage sweetheart, William Harrison Spencer. The two were inseparable and enjoyed 60 years together and raised three wonderful daughters.
Jane Ann and her husband, Bill, owned and operated Sycamore Apartments for many years.
She loved people and had a huge heart for helping others and particularly those who needed it most. She was a true advocate of kindness and humanity. She volunteered many hours helping others find housing, services and basic needs to improve their lives. Through the years, she touched many lives, and there were many who touched her life in turn. She was a selfless, incredible woman. Her compassionate heart included a love for all of God's creatures.
Her interests were traveling all over the world, to include Italy, France and Ireland, to name a few. She loved gardening and canning, and was a cookbook connoisseur. Jane was naturally talented as an artist, a photographer, a writer and guitar and piano player. She enjoyed her life, her gifts of talent and the compassionate heart she was given.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Barbara Alexander and Nancy Johnson.
In addition to her husband, Bill, she is survived by three daughters, Julie Spencer-Banks and husband Michael of Sharpsburg, Georgia, Susan DeCourcy and husband Ken of Dallas, Georgia, and Tricia Spencer-Babco and husband Scott of Punxsutawney; eight grandchildren, Lauren DeCourcy, Lakin DeCourcy-Robinson, Natasha Vaughn, Danielle Reitz, Meagan DeCourcy, Lucas DeCourcy, Chelsea Babco-Dallas and Parker Babco; eight great-grandchildren; and two brothers-in-law, Roger Alexander of Texas and Michael Johnson of Virginia.
In accordance with her wishes, there will be no visitation. Arrangements have been entrusted to Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Punxsutawney.
She will be interred at the American Legion Memorial Plot near Circle Hill Cemetery, Bell Township.
Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the charity of your choice. Jane was a huge supporter of many wonderful causes over the years. Online condolences may be made at www.shumakerfh.com.

Sorry I didn't know she passed away. If I knew I forgot because of my off & on dementia from having Lupus. Sorry Tricia your Mother was a Great Lady.

I always considered Jane and Bill to be kind of like godparents to me. I was not what anyone would consider a good kid but Jane thought i was and was always there with some no nonsense advice that would occasionally make me see the error of my ways. Then as a young adult she helped me again by getting me off of the street and into a place to live that had heat and shelter. Definitely one of the best people I've ever known and one of the reasons I'm alive today.

Jane Ann will be missed by many people. I met her when I moved into Sycamore Apts with my mother and my daughters. She was, without a doubt, the kindest, most caring woman I have ever met. She was such a joy to be around and a wonderful role model for many. It was a blessing to have known her. Her soul touched so many of us. Rest in peace, Jane Ann! You will be remembered by so many of us whose lives you changed for the better.

I had the pleasure of sharing lunch with Jane at the IUP Culinary School.
Jane had such a beautiful spirit. I never forgot her. She emailed me a recipe after that .
