Michael Gudalis Obituary

Michael P. Gudalis, a lifelong resident of Sykesville, died at the age of 91 on Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2016, after an extended illness.

Mike was born on March 18, 1925, in Sykesville. He was the son of the late Joseph E. and Martha (Povalitis) Gudalis.

Mike was a graduate of Sykesville High School.

He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army.

He married Emily Negrey, his wife of 64 years, in DuBois on Aug. 23, 1952; she survives.

He was employed as a conductor for the Chessie System/CSX Railroad for 46 years, until his retirement on Aug. 28, 1987. He was the last surviving member of the B&O crew that took the last steam engine out of Pittsburgh.

Mike was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Church in DuBois.

He was a member of the Reynoldsville Elks, the Sykesville Lions Club and the B&O Historical Society. He was also a 65-year member of the UTU (United Transportation Union).

Mike was an avid baseball fan. He loved to play poker and to go to the casino at Salamanca, New York. He would never turn down a good poker game.

In addition to his wife, Mike is survived by a son, Mark Gudalis of Monaca, Pa.; a grandson, Jason M. Gudalis of Washington, D.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, William, Anthony, Bernard and Frank, and a sister, Lucy Minko.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Furlong Funeral Home, Gregory K. Furlong FD, corner of Broad St. and First Ave., Summerville, Pa.

The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Sykesville Volunteer Ambulance or the Sykesville Library.
