Norman Smith Obituary

Norman C. "Popeye" Smith, 91, of Punxsutawney, passed away on Friday, Aug. 22, 2025, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.
He was born May 1, 1934, to Cash L. Smith and Virginia (White) Smith at home in Big Run.
He married the love of his life, Nancy (Whitesell) Smith, who survives, on Oct. 16, 1954, and they celebrated 70 years of marriage last year. Norman formerly served in the National Guard. He held multiple jobs throughout his working life, beginning by working in a family-owned coal mine and then spending the rest of his career working at Mahoning Valley Milling. He was a member of the National Rifle Association and the Frostburg United Methodist Church, where he was a licensed lay speaker. He recently returned to attending his home church, Grange Church of God. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, tending his farm and camping with his family. He loved spending time with his family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Gary L. Smith (Jenny) and Larry E. Smith both of Punxsutawney; four grandchildren, Karen (Smith) Haught (Chris), Kimberly (Smith) Arthurs (Mike), Michael Smith, and Joseph C. Smith (Tonya); 10 great-grandchildren, Adam and Kira Haught, Emma, Kaylee, Brennen, and Theresa Smith, Zoey and Eden Smith, and Kylee and Brycen Arthurs; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by seven brothers, Ernie, George, Paul, Marlin, France, Sam and Dave Smith, and a sister, Virginia Smith Frantz.
Norman was the last surviving of his siblings.
Friends will be received on Saturday, Aug. 30, 2025, from 9 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:30 a.m. at the McCabe Funeral Home, Inc., 114 Maple Ave., Punxsutawney, PA 15767, with Pastor Marcus John officiating.
