EAST MOLINE-Donald Ray Vickroy, 75, of East Moline, Illinois, passed away Saturday, December 3, 2022, at Unity Point – Trinity, in Rock Island, Illinois. Services will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday December 8, 2022 at Countryside Christian Church, 3817- 230th St. N., Port Byron, IL. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM on Wednesday at the Church. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Countryside Christian Church. Gibson – Bode Funeral Home, Port Byron is in charge of arrangements.
Don Vickroy became a member of Countryside Christian Church in 1959. He had been active as a Deacon, and then as Elder since 2016. He also was Chairman of the Evangelism Department and taught Sunday School. He served in the US Army from 1966 to 1970. Don worked for the US Department of Defense retiring in January 2013 with 35 years of service. He had a Masters of Public Administration from Drake University. His hobbies included collecting antique toys and fishing. One of his favorite scripture verses was John 14:16 Jesus answered "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me."
Donald is survived by his wife Donna; children, Nathan Vickroy of Flagstaff, AZ, Laura (Michael) Blake of Williamsburg, IA, Angela (Mike) Garofalo of Stockholm, NJ, Christopher (Suzanne) Bauer of Indianola, IA; sisters, Gail (Jamie) Horst of Coal Valley, IL, Pam (Glen) Banowetz of Maquoketa, IA, and Roschelle Wachter of Ft. Mill, SC; along with 14 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Donald was preceded in death by his parents, and a son Bill Vickroy. Don and Donna have always been great neighbors. Both Liz and I enjoyed our backyard chats, especially trying to steal their secrets in attracting the songbirds. Don always set the neighborhood standard for his landscaping.
I will miss his kind approach and his wonderful grin.
