Dorothy Zwicker Obituary

Dorothy Zwicker

March 31, 1920 - December 21, 2024

Dorothy Louise Zwicker of Moline, Ill., formerly Preemption, Ill., passed away Saturday, December 21, 2024 at Charter Memory Care of Moline. Cremation Rites will be accorded. The Visitation will be held Monday, March 31, 2025 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Preemption UMC. The Memorial Service will directly follow at 11 a.m. Inurnment will be at Preemption Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to: Preemption United Methodist Church.

Dorothy was born at home in rural Preemption on March 31, 1920, daughter of Latimer and Margaret (Armstrong) Holdsworth. She married Harold C. Zwicker in her parent's home on March 10, 1943.

She started school a year ahead of time because her parents wanted their older daughter, Arlene, to have someone to walk through the cattle pasture with. Dorothy was active in 4-H and at 18 was chosen to attend Club Congress in Chicago where 4-Hers from all over the nation were treated to banquets and tours of several Chicago landmarks. As a young bride Dorothy lived in Nashville for a time when Harold was stationed there. Their landlady gave her the following recommendation letter: "Dorothy is a wonderful little mother and house keeper taking perfect care of her apartment. As a rule, I don't take children but in this case it has worked out very satisfactory."

When Harold was discharged from service in WWII, they returned home to the family farm near Preemption where Dorothy devoted her time to raising their three children. She also was a 4-H club leader and church youth group leader and was a top-notch baker and cook. She grew a large garden, canning and freezing produce from it each year. At 85 she was still making rhubarb pies for her church's annual ice cream social.

Dorothy will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her sister, Evelyn Barton of Moline; her brother, Kenneth Holdsworth of Aledo; her children, Judith "Judy" (Robert) Douglass of Overland Park, Kan., David (Naomi) Zwicker of Aledo, Ill., and Marilyn (John) Lamoreux of Lanark, Ill.; seven grandchildren, David Douglass, Austin Zwicker, Andrea Nelson, Jennifer Fisher, Darcy Mathes, Andrew Lamoreux, and Dan Lamoreux; sixteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; sister, A. Arlene Tary and brother-in law, Leo Tary; brother-in-law, Lawrence "Pete" Barton; sister-in-law, Marian Holdsworth; and grandson, Dale Douglass.

The family is grateful to the staff of Charter Memory Care of Moline, and ProMedica hospice staff who gave her excellent care.
