January 10, 1941 - August 22, 2025
George A. Zeitler, 84, Sherrard, Ill., passed away on Friday, August 22, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Visitation will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. with a funeral service following at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Wheelan-Pressly Funeral Home and Crematory, Milan. Interment will follow at Rock Island Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family.
George was born January 10, 1941, to John and Eva (Wangelin) Zeitler in Rock Island, Ill. He grew up on a farm near Sherrard. After graduating from Sherrard High School, he enlisted in the US Army Reserves. Following his service, he returned to the family farm where they grew corn, soybeans, and raised livestock. Like many farmers, he wasn't one to retire and was still farming at the time of his passing.
On August 21, 1971, he was united in marriage to Carol Martin at Preemption United Methodist Church. They later had two sons.
George was a member of the Preemption United Methodist Church. He was a volunteer firefighter for Sherrard for 25 years and also served as a first responder for many years. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing. He never met a stranger and loved sharing stories with everyone.
He is survived by his sons, Doug (Brenda) Zeitler and Todd (Penny) Zeitler; siblings, Margo (Lyle) Newton, Loren Zeitler, and David Zeitler.
His wife; parents; brother, John "Wally" Zeitler, preceded him in death.

George and I met when we were members of the 338th Basic Combat Trainng unit based in Rock Island, Illinois, in 1963. He worked as an assistant to the unit's armorer, caring for the unit's M1 Garand 30-06 caliber rifles. He was proud to have qualified during basic training, as an EXPERT, with the rifle during trainfire, with 90 or more target hits out of 100 rounds fired. During most times when I visited him at the farm, he usually showed me his latest acquired "rock", otherwise known as an American Indian axehead, or some other Indian artifact, whether it was an arrowhead, scraper, knife, etcetra, as each of us had a cold Pepsi. He also owned more Judy Garland pitichers than I knew existed. He farmed the land following his Dad, who bought the land and the family moved there from Rock Island. Be at rest with God, old friend !
