Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline. James was born on August 7, 1934, in Pickens, Mississippi, to William and Edna (Toombs). He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1954 and served through 1957.
Jim graduated from Mississippi State University. He began work as a civilian for the Department of the Army as a quality assurance specialist until his retirement in 1999. His work required extensive travel overseas which he loved. He lived in Germany for eleven years and could speak fluent German as well as several other languages.
After retirement, the Boston Terrier got too bossy, so he went to work for Culver's in Moline for ten years and loved joking with the dining room regulars.
He married Karen Manion on July 21, 1989, and was a wonderful stepfather to Heather and Ryan.
Jim was an avid reader, loved church, telling jokes, NASCAR, euchre, entering contests and winning, and going on many trips. He was very generous, always willing to help someone in need.
Those left to honor his memory are his wife; stepdaughter, Heather Manion; stepson, Ryan (Christina) Manion; and five grandchildren.
James was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.

Your obituary described Jim to a tee! I had to laugh when he affectionately called "Boston Terrier". He seriously loved his family and his Saviour!
