Lowell Dorman Obituary
May 24, 1946 - February 22, 2025
Lowell P. Dorman, 78, Rock Island, IL, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, February 22, 2025. In accordance with his wishes, he donated his body to the University of Iowa Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology Deeded Body Program. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Quad City Animal Welfare Center, Rock Island Art Guild, or Quad City Symphony.
Lowell was born on May 24, 1946, to Paul and Corrine (Johnson) Dorman in Spencer, IA. He graduated from Spencer High School in 1964, and then attended the University of Northern Iowa. In 1967 Lowell was united in marriage to Patricia Jean Farnham.
Lowell pursued a career in radio, moving from Waterloo to Fort Dodge, IA, before settling in Rock Island as station engineer for radio station WQUA. While in the Quad Cities, he helped to build and operate KRVR in Davenport and WGEN in Geneseo. These jobs led to a consulting position in Chicago and Milwaukee consulting for radio markets and as station manager for WXJY. He returned to the Quad Cities as the founding program director for WVIK Public Radio at Augustana College. He was named general manager of WVIK in 2003 and then retired in 2008 after 28 years
Lowell also served on the Boards of Directors of Rock Island Art Guild and Quad City Animal Welfare Center. He very much enjoyed regional art and supporting local artists in both visual and music. Lowell also deeply enjoyed railroading both as a lifelong avid railfan and model railroader.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Patricia; daughter, Gwyndlyn Krause of Chillicothe, IL; son, Paul Dorman of Rock Island, IL; sister, Joanne McCallister of Ottawa, IL; a niece and three nephews; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Darrell Dorman.
