ILLINOIS CITY-Merle C. Reed Jr, 81, of Illinois City, passed away on Saturday, June 10, 2023. Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 16, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at the Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral and Cremation Services of Muscatine. Burial will take place at Drury Reynolds Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 15, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Drury Reynolds Cemetery in memory of Merle. Merle Clinton Reed Jr. was born on December 31, 1941 in Muscatine, Iowa, the son of Merle and Martha (Bopp) Reed Sr. He graduated from Rockridge High School. On June 23, 1963, he was united in marriage to Linda Sedam at St. Mathias Catholic Church in Muscatine. Merle was a lifelong farmer and enjoyed working with livestock, especially horses. He worked at John Deere for 30 years, retiring in 1996. Merle was a lifetime member of the Illinois City Saddle Club, serving as President for a number of years. He enjoyed antique tractor rides. Merle and Linda traveled to South Dakota, Missouri and Colorado for many years with their horses for trail rides. Most of all, he enjoyed going to his grandchildren's activities.
Merle is survived by his wife, Linda of Illinois City; children, Dan Reed of Illinois City and Sherry Reed of Maricopa, AZ; grandchildren, Amanda Reed, Ashley Reed, Derek (Ashley) Reed Samantha Sours and Nic Sours; great-grandchildren; Ayvin Newcomb, Simmi Reed and Ruzek Reed; sisters, Mary Ellen Longcor of Muscatine, Marjorie (David) Bowers of Orion, IL and Carol (David) Martin of Edgington, IL and his "part-time dog", Fancy Pants.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
