NEW WINDSOR-Walter "Gene" Mayhew, 67 of New Windsor, died July 21, 2021 at Unity Point Methodist Hospital, Peoria. Visitation is Saturday, July 24th from 9 to 11 AM at Speer Funeral Home, Aledo. Private family graveside services will be in Preemption Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made the Walter "Gene" Mayhew Memorial Fund. Condolences may be left at speerfuneralhome.com.
Walter Eugene Mayhew was born on August 30, 1953 in Aledo, Illinois to Donald E. & Dorothy L. (Hollowell) Mayhew. He attended Black Hawk College before working for the Burlington Northern Railroad for several years. Gene helped on the family farm, he especially enjoyed the livestock.
Gene was a Die-hard Chicago Cubs Fan. He also enjoyed watching the Fighting Illini. In his younger years he played slow-pitch softball and golfed. Gene looked forward to his weekly calls from Ray and Mark and hearing the stories about his nieces and nephews. During his illness, he had his own personal Uber driver, Mary, whom he made good use of.
Gene is survived by his brother, Jim Mayhew; sister and brother-in-law, Mary &Tom Bischoff all of New Windsor; nieces and nephews: Troy & Tara Mayhew of Viola; Lance & Ann Mayhew of Sherrard and Karissa & Ryan McDaniel of Zionsville, IN and great-nieces and nephews: Maddux, Rian, Hugh and Sloane.
