Arlene Newman Obituary
(1940-2025)
Mary "Arlene" Haufle Newman, beloved mother and wife from the Quad Cities and Cedar Rapids, IA, passed away at Grand Living Memory Care in Cedar Rapids on October 18, 2025, leaving a void her family cannot fill.
She was born in Cedar Rapids in 1940 to Mary Agnes Braden and Russ Haufle, and was the oldest of three children. Arlene attended St Patrick's Catholic School before joining an Arthur Murray Dance school where she excelled as an instructor. Arlene also completed classes and was licensed as a cosmetologist working successfully for a number of years.
Arlene always carried herself with class, elegance, and grace. She was loving, accepting, and considered every new person she met a friend. She had a flamboyant and artistic side and loved to visit with and talk to people whenever she had the chance. She was generous as well and giving gifts was one of her joys in life.
Her children, Deb, Jim, and Mike were her pride and joy. She was dedicated as a mother, and they felt that in the love and support she provided.
Arlene took special joy in her grandchildren and often vacationed with them at fun destination locations like the Wisconsin Dells and Walt Disney World where she frequently bought them more gifts than their parents found appropriate. Arlene and Cliff also were amateur astronomers and traveled to see six total solar eclipses together.
Arlene was preceded in death by her sister, Tina Irons; nephew, Russ Irons; brother, James Haufle; sister-in-law, Sherri Franks; niece, Laura Hart; brother, Christopher Haufle; mother, Mary Agnes Haufle and father, Russ Haufle. She is survived by her husband, Cliff Newman; daughter, Deb Newman; son, Jim Newman (Yolanda); son, Mike Newman (Sandra); her Norwegian daughter, Jorunn (Ola) Rønsen; grandchildren, Josh (Lacie), Noah (Natalie), Aaron (Kelsey), Eric (Karla), Braeden, Jacob and Fidel (Melissa); and several great-grandchildren, who will never forget the love she brought to their lives.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 7, 2025, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Cedar Rapids, by the Rev. Dennis Miller and the Rev. Ivan Nienhaus. Burial: Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery, Cedar Rapids. A Rosary Service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday, November 6, at Teahen Funeral Home. Those not attending the Rosary may visit with the family from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home or after 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Donations made to Alzheimer's or dementia research efforts in her name are appreciated.

A platinum crown of curls, a ponytail’s playful sway, Arlene arrived like sunrise—warm, instant, here to stay. She saw God’s hand in kittens, in starlight Cliff adored, In every blooming garden, in music’s barbershop chord.
Three children—James, Deb, Michael—her proudest, brightest song; She spoke their names like blessings, then let the silence throng. Grandmother indulgent, great-grandmother’s open arms, A friend the moment eyes met, disarming every harm.
Her kitchen breathed of nutmeg, of rum logs rolled with care, Peanut-butter balls in chocolate, cookies beyond compare. Tupperware towers marched in, carried by Cliff and her, Holiday giggles spilling—pure wonder, childlike, sure.
She wrapped your whispered wishes in bows that seemed to sing, Remembered every detail, turned moments into spring. Arlene, sweet architect of delight and gratitude, Your legacy is blessing—every heart you wished good to.

SHE WAS THE MOST AMAZING LADY. WE ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT WHEN CAME IN TO OUR DENTAL OFFICE. THE BIGGEST HEART...MY FAVORITE MEMORY WAS WHEN SHE HAD SHOULDER SURGERY AND CLIFF WAS IN CHARGE OF DOING HER HAIR AND MAKEUP.. HE DID GOOD!

Arlene leaves a bright legacy! She was a friend since the early 70’s and I cannot ever remember Arlene being anything other than uplifting and kind.
