Charles P. Conner, age 88, of Davenport, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 11, 2023, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, at New Life Baptist Church, Davenport. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. Monday at Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home, Davenport, and from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. prior to services Tuesday at the church. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park.
Memorials may be made to the family for a memorial to be established in his name.
Charles was born on February 5, 1935, in Johnson City, TN, to Charles and Nanny (Hardy) Conner. He was united in marriage to L. Maxine Garrettson on October 2, 1952, in Davenport. She preceded him in death on December 15, 2016.
Charles had a 35-year career with Sivyer Steel where he worked in several positions, lastly as a fork truck driver. While working at Sivyer, he also started a lawn mowing business and did this even into retirement. Charles enjoyed church and was a member of New Life Baptist Church. In his early years, Charles enjoyed camping with his family, growing his vegetable garden. Charles was known in the neighborhood as the bicycle repair guy and would fix the bikes for anyone at no cost to them. He especially enjoyed his family, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include his children: Ronda (Roy) Arey, Robert (Vickie) Conner, Dan Conner, Bruce Conner, and Shawn (Cindy) Conner; 15 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Sheets; and his four-legged friends.
In addition to his parents, and wife, Charles was preceded in death by his son Rod, on March 26, 2023; siblings: Wiley, Anna Bell, Howard, Kate, Eva, Raymond, Roy, Arthur, Minnie, and Thomas.
