Cheryl DeSmet Obituary

Cheryl DeSmet

June 26, 1945 - August 18, 2025

Cheryl DeSmet, 80, of Moline, passed away peacefully at Clarissa Cook Hospice House surrounded by family, on August 18, 2025.

Visitation service will be 1 to 3 p.m., Sunday, August 24, 2025 at Rafferty Funeral Home, 2111-1st St. A, Moline, with a rosary at 12:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, August 25, 2025 at Sacred Heart, Moline, to be followed by burial at National Cemetery, Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sacred Heart Church or Seton Catholic School.

Cheryl was born June 26, 1945, to William and Lorriane Kelly in Moline, Ill. She married Dennis DeSmet, April 20, 1968. She graduated from Alleman High School and St. Anthony's School of Nursing. She was a third shift nurse at St. Anthony (Franciscan) Trinity for over forty years, mostly in the CCU and ICU. While the challenges of nursing were many, she found bedside nursing her greatest love.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church (St. Mary's - 40 years before). She was a member of the Altar & Rosary Society and VFW Auxiliary.

She loved time with her family, especially following her children and grandchildren in their school and sporting activities. She and Dennis loved the outdoors, be it camping, fishing, or listening to 70's music around the campfire.

She is survived by her husband, Dennis, Moline; daughters, Mary Ann DeSmet and Kristen Girardi, St. Louis, Mo., and Jennifer DeSmet-Putnam and Scotta Morton, Columbia, Mo.; granddaughters, Kaylen and Aliyah DeSmet-Girardi; grandsons, Jack, Tyler, and Callen Putnam; son in-law, Michael Ransom, East Moline; brothers, Steven and Denise Kelly, Geneva, Ill., Tim and Trish Kelly, Moline; and sister, Maureen and Charlie Ragland, Bloomington, Ind. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael DeSmet; daughter, Kate Ransom; parents; and her brothers, William and Jeffrey Kelly.

Special thanks to so many family and friends for all their love and support throughout the years. Thank you to special neighbors, Tom Buchmeyer and Rosey and David for their prayers, support, and unwavering love during her cancer battle.
