Clay Dawson
June 18, 1934-December 20, 2018
DAVENPORT - Clay Howard Dawson, 84, passed away December 20, 2018 at the Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House.
Clay was born in Davenport, Iowa on June 18, 1934, to Clifford J. Dawson and Gladys (Brown) Dawson. Clay attended Garfield Elementary, Sudlow Junior High and graduated from Davenport Central High School. He received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, graduating Magna Cum Laude. While at Coe he met his wife, Kathy (Morgan) Dawson in the cast of Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors. They were married shortly after graduation in 1956 in the Coe College Chapel. Following a teaching position at Monticello, Iowa, he was drafted into the United States Army, where he became an instructor of missile electronics at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama. He later completed his Master of Music degree from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
In 1965 Clay accepted a position as Director of Choral Activities at Northeast Missouri State University (Truman State University) in Kirksville, Missouri, where he taught voice, diction courses, and directed the choral ensembles, including the NEMO Singers, for 28 years. His choirs appeared in state and national music conventions. While at NMSU he was a teacher and role model to thousands of music students, many of whom have continued in music as professional or church musicians around the country. Clay also served as choir director at First Christian Church in Kirksville.
Following his retirement from NMSU, Clay and Kathy moved to Long Grove, Iowa, where he accepted a position as choir director at St. Johns Methodist Church in Davenport. He also worked part-time at the Scott County Library and helped with the Bookmobile for a number of years.
While in Baton Rouge, Clay developed a passion for horticulture. That interest followed him to Kirksville, and he built and maintained greenhouses in both Kirksville and Long Grove, where he specialized in orchids, bromeliads and other tropical plants. While in Kirksville, Clay established Dawson's Gardens, which included hundreds varieties of day lily plants. Many of those plants found their way to Long Grove, and can be seen in their beautiful yard each summer. Clay was a member of the Illowa Orchid Society, the Cedar Valley Iris and Day Lily Society and was a Master Gardener. He was happiest when he was working in his Long Grove garden, assisted by one of the many dachshunds that he and Kathy raised over the years.
Other interests included furniture refinishing and chair caning, collecting antique toys, clocks, glassware, early sheet music and early musical instruments.
Clay was a member of National Association of Teachers of Singing, Phi Mu Alpha music fraternity (province governor), Missouri Choral Directors Association (state president), American Choral Directors Association, Missouri Music Educators Association, Music Educators National Conference (NAfME) and Quester's.
Those left to honor Clay's memory are his wife Kathleen; daughters Anne Dawson and Vicki Schaeffer, Norman, OK; brother Theodore (Denise) Dawson, Durham, North Carolina; brother-in-law Alan (Jolyn) Morgan, North Liberty, IA; sister-in-law Karen Moline, Marengo, IA; and many nieces and nephews. Clay was preceded in death by brothers John and Jack Dawson.
Memorials may be made to Eldridge United Methodist Church, Eldridge, Iowa, where he was a longtime member. A musical celebration of his life will be forthcoming in the summer.
Arrangements have been made through Iowa Cremation.

Thank you Clay and Kathy for shaping who I am as a musician. In my church choral directing I often hear Mr. Dawson's voice in my head. The music we sang in NEMO singers was a highlight and joy, and continues to inform my choral music selections and presentations in church. I know he is surrounded by a rich garden as he directs his heavenly choir. Peace to Anne, Kathy and family.

I just learned of Clay's death this week. I am saddened by the news. I have fond memories of a man who took a chance on me and chose me to be part of the NEMO Singers for 3 years. I learned so much from him musically and personally that I continue to use to this day. He helped me appreciate the beauty of choral music which I still enjoy today as part of my church's choir. May God enjoy your many talents with those heavenly choirs. Peace and comfort to you, Kathy, and your family.

So very sorry to hear of Clay's passing. He was the biggest influence in my life. As my voice teacher he gave me the skill and guidance to become the voice teacher and public school choral director that I was for 26 years. He was the best mentor anyone could ever hope for. My gratitude is unending. Blessings and prayers Linda and I send to Kathy and Anne.

I can still hear Mr. Dawson's voice in my head clear as day saying, "Sopraaanoooos..." as he urged those of us in NMSU's University Chorus to be better singers than we thought we could be. I learned a lot from him, about music and life. I'll never forget my time at Northeast, and he was a big part of that. Thank you, Mr. Dawson!

So sad to hear this! As an instrumentalist at NMSU in the 80's, I never directly sat under his teaching, but I loved hearing his choirs rehearse! I was so impressed by what I heard all those years. He was always a happy soul to see in the halls of Baldwin Hall. May God's peace be especially near your family with his loss.

He changed my life and the lives of many others. And so many of us sang for anther 50 years. He saw and heard things in us that we could not always see in ourselves and inspired us to be better than we thought possible, both separately and together. And we remember. Thank you being present in our lives when it really counted.

Although a physical education major, I learned so much from Mr. Dawson. He and Kathy always enjoyed the English sheepdog I would bring to NEMO practices! I consider him, and Kathy, to be two wonderful, wonderful people! God bless him, in heaven, and his family. I know he is directing one of God's choirs in heaven.

I have so many fond memories of Clay and Kathy in NEMO singers. I met my wife Kathy in NEMO singers. If it wasn't for Clay and the NEMO singers I might not have graduated college. He was a mentor and dear friend who lifted all of us up when we needed it. He made us better musicians and people. Working with Clay, Kathy and the NEMO singers were the highlight of college. Thanks Clay for all u did for us students. May u Rest In Peace in Gods hands. Please let us know when his celebration of life will be.
Thanks. Doug and Kathy Peterson.

My most sincere condolences to Kathy and Anne. I was privileged to have Mr. Dawson and Mrs. Dawson for my vocal training at NMSU from 1967-1970. Mr. Dawson was a sincere friend, mentor and role model. He and Mrs. Dawson added to my love of music, antique furniture, horticulture and so much more. I owe them a huge debt of gratitude for the direction they gave to my life and career as a music teacher. Mr. Dawson taught me to cane chairs and I still have and treasure some plants he shared with me! He will be missed and hold admiration by me and many others forever. Gloria Guinn

As members of the Kirksville Christian Church choir, we looked forward to being in church every Sunday. He and Kathy were so involved in the music program, choirs, and handbells that our own children grew to love music even more. He was one of a kind and will certainly be missed. Hugs and prayers to Kathy, Anne, and Vicki as well as his other family we were never privileged to know. I can almost hear the Heavenly choir now!

Requiescat in pace, Mr. Dawson. We are thankful for the beauty and depth of song that we were able to make and for the lasting relationships that we're formed under your leadership. The musical skills you helped us grow, the discernment of what is "good" that you fostered in your students, and the appreciation of beauty in nature, in art, and the individual are gifts we carry with us every day. These gifts still inform our aesthetic as professional musicians, and for this we are grateful, and it is through these gifts that your musical legacy endures. Our prayers are with Mrs. Dawson, Anne, and Vicki during this time of remembrance and celebration of your life.

Mr. Dawson was my beloved vocal teacher for my 5 years at NMSU. He impacted my life in countless ways....always urging me to do my absolute best, and then some! He was my encouragement, support, and my friend. My respect for him and his wife is so high I never could call them by their first name. Mr. Dawson saw the potential in me and worked hard to draw it out. Besides God....I owe my skills to Mr. Dawson!! I look forward to seeing him again in heaven and singing with him in that huge choir!! I love you, Mr. Dawson!!!!

Mr. Dawson opened my eyes to how beautiful choral music could be. It was a privilege to sing under him in NEMO Singers and at First Christian during my college years. I continue to sing in my own church choir to this day. Prayers & love to Anne, Kathy & Vickie at this difficult time.
