Daniel Johnson Obituary

Dr. Daniel B. Johnson

July 10, 1954-January 19, 2020

BETTENDORF-Dr. Daniel B. Johnson, 65, of Bettendorf, IA, passed away peacefully Sunday, January 19, 2020, after a courageous battle with ALS. He was at home, surrounded by his loving family. Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Iowa Chapter of the ALS Association via the Daniel B. Johnson Memorial Fund.

Dan was born July 10, 1954, to Arthur and Darlene Johnson in Dixon, IL. He graduated in 1972 from Newman Central Catholic High School in Sterling, IL. At Northwestern University, he earned his B.S. in 1976, graduated from medical school in 1980, and completed his neurology residency in 1984. During this time, he met his wife Ginny. They married June 18, 1977. They spent 42 amazing years together, and raised two lovely daughters, Laura and Emily.

After residency, Dan moved to the Quad Cites and established Neurology Consultants P.C. His dedication, compassion and willingness to teach others has raised the standard of neurologic care in the area. In 2014, the Daniel B. Johnson, M.D. Genesis Stroke Program was dedicated in his name. Throughout his career, Dan has had a lasting impact on his colleagues, patients, and their families.

In addition to being a devoted husband and father, Dan enjoyed travelling with family and friends, gardening, reading, and family card nights. He was an avid fan of Chicago sports, especially the Northwestern Wildcats and the Chicago Cubs. Despite his illness, he made the most of every day, continuing to travel, attend NU football games, and make everyone around him laugh. His intellectual curiosity never wavered. Most importantly, he got to meet his first grandson, Jameson Daniel, his "dream come true". Please raise a cocktail and enjoy a great meal in Dan's honor.

Dan will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 42 years, Virginia; daughters Laura Johnson and Emily (Matt) Skahill; grandson Jameson Daniel; father Arthur Johnson; sister Kathy (Keith) Peugh; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Darlene.

The family would like to express their deep gratitude to the wonderful caregivers that aided them during Dan's battle with ALS.

Missing him always. A spectacular doctor who ministered to the body as well as the soul. Respected in his field and a friend to his patients as well.

To the entire "Dr. Dan" Family :
He was the best of the best. In 1985 he diagnosed me with Myasthenia Gravis and I was terrified. He never wavered in supporting me throughout the years of care he gave me and I always looked forward to my routine visits with him. Always a laugh and a smile came along with his attention to my needs and his caring way. He cared for my family as much as he cared for me, always asking how they were doing and what my kids were up to etc..I loved his laugh.
He never ceased to amaze me with both his expertise and his friendship. He was so proud of your family and shared his excitement of travels and graduations, marriages and I'm just so happy he got to meet his grandson.
I wish you all peace. That smile of his is etched in my memory forever and I hope in yours too.

As manager of the Neurodiagnostic and Sleep Disorder Center at Genesis, I had the honor and pleasure of working directly with Dan for many years. The day he learned that my mother was having symptoms of a neurological disorder, he immediately instructed his scheduler to clear the noon hour because "Vicki's mom is coming in." I am forever grateful for that. Also, when I was the instructor for the electroneurodiagnostics program at SCC, he volunteered time to give brilliant lectures to my students. A caring and intelligent man, a wonderful human being and a great friend.

Doctor Johnson was a great friend and supportive physician through my 40 years of multiple sclerosis.E. Every appointment was never finished until I got a good chuckle from him. It was because of him, my secondary progressive MS was much more tolerable. I've missed him terribly since he left. All my prayers and affection.

Dr. Johnson was my husband's doctor and friend. I wasn't able to express my gratitude in person, but I know that he is in heaven having a good talk and laugh with my husband. They can't be anywhere else with all they went through. Dr. Johnson will forever be remembered as one of the best. My condolences to his family.
