James Fisher Obituary

James "Jim" Fisher

January 1, 1942 - January 17, 2025

James "Jim" Fisher, 83, of Davenport, Iowa, passed away Friday, January 17, 2025, with his beloved family by his side. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2025, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Weerts Funeral Home. Funeral services to honor Jim's life will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Weerts Funeral Home with military honors to follow. There will be a time of sharing and refreshments following the service. Memorials in Jim's name may be made to the family.

Jim was born on January 1, 1942, in Whittemore, Iowa, the son of Charles and Lulu Fisher. Following high school, Jim joined the United States Air Force where he was a linguist and fell in love with the Russian language. During his time with the Air Force, Jim also became fluent in Japanese. On August 19, 1967, after a few hiccups along the way, Jim was united in marriage to Marsha Godden in Osage, Iowa. He started his radio career in Mason City, Iowa with KRIB and later moved to Cedar Rapids where he was a radio host with KCRG. During his time in Cedar Rapids, Jim earned his Bachelor's degree in Political Science. In the mid-1970's, Jim and Marsha moved to Davenport, Iowa where Jim was a weatherman on WOC-TV (now KWQC-TV6) and in the late 70's, he transitioned to WOC-AM where he graced the Quad City airways as the first talk show host until his retirement in 2020. Jim's first guest interview on WOC-AM was the then Presidential Candidate, Ronald Regean. He also interviewed comedian, Phyllis Diller, and had monthly talks with Senator Chuck Grassley. Jim loved all things politics and was a strong Republican.

Jim loved all things Russian from books to music; it was often joked about that you could hear Jim's music whether in his car or in his office, before you saw him. He was involved in many of the local V.A. organizations and was always there to lend a helping hand; he was also lucky enough to be selected to go on one of the Honor Flights to Washington D.C. Jim loved to spend time in the great outdoors fishing and hunting with his family. He attended Trinity Lutheran church for many years, was a member of the Moose Club, a Boy Scott leader, and was a Y-Indian Guide. Though radio was a large part of Jim's life, his family was his number one pride and joy. He enjoyed spending time with his children and later in life, spending time with his grandchildren.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife of 57 years, Marsha; children, Charles Fisher, James Fisher, and Jessica (Jacob) Freemyer; grandchildren, Dallas, Dakota, Rose, and Rayna; siblings, Sue Bergan, Steve Fisher, Vicki Fisher, and Pamela Olstad; along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Lulu.

My condolences to the family. I never really met Jim personally but felt like I knew him anyway. We lived in Rock Island for several years. With my job I spent a fair amount of time driving in the area. I listened to Jim religiously on the radio. He was a fair minded, down to earth guy with well thought out beliefs and convictions. Even when we did not see eye to eye on an issue I still enjoyed his insight, May he rest in peace.

I miss my conversations with Jim on talk 14, I miss the antagonistic arguments he had with those who did not share his view! I miss his incredible sense of humor and sarcastic deliveries at times. When he left the airways of the QC, we lost a lifetime friend! He gave a voice to those who were brave enough to call. He has been greatly missed by this community, I cannot imagine the void his amazing family now feels. May God Bless you, May He Keep you, May he Comfort you and give you Peace! Godspeed my friend, until we meet again!
