Loren Erickson Obituary

Loren Erickson

July 29, 1953 - January 20, 2026

Loren R. Erickson, age 72, of Durant, Iowa, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at UnityPoint Health - Muscatine.

A visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Monday, January 26, 2026, at Bentley Funeral Home, Durant. Cremation rites will be accorded following the visitation. Memorials may be made to the Durant Fire Department. Online condolences may be left at www.bentleyfuneralhome.com

Loren was born on July 29, 1953, the son of Raymond and Ruth (Rock) Erickson in Davenport. He graduated from Davenport West High School with the Class of 1971. After graduation, Loren attended Muscatine Community College, where he earned his Associate Degree in Agriculture Business. Loren married JoEllen Boeckelmann on July 5, 1986 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Durant.

Loren began his working career in Maintenance at North Star Steel in Wilton. He later worked as a delivery driver for Paper Lumber and then for Seiffert Lumber in Davenport, where he remained until his retirement. Loren was known for his strong work ethic, reliability, and pride in a job well done. A farmer his entire life, Loren was passionate about agriculture and livestock. He focused on raising cattle, particularly Angus/Simmental breeds, and also devoted many years to breeding and showing Arabian horses. His love for horses took him across the country to shows, where he formed lasting friendships and memories.

Loren enjoyed spending time with his wife camping and traveling in their RV. Together they explored destinations such as Key West, Florida, the Black Hills, and many other places along the way. Closer to home, he found joy in dining out, visiting with neighbors, and cruising the gravel roads in his side-by-side, stopping to catch up with friends and neighbors. He was also a member of the Muscatine Cattlemen Association. Family was at the center of Loren's life. He loved attending his children's and grandchildren's sporting events and activities and was one of their biggest supporters. Loren was also a huge Iowa State Cyclones fan and enjoyed cheering them on whenever he could.

Loren will be dearly missed by his loving wife, JoEllen; two children, Jamie (Toni) Dean of Durant and Jill (Jim) Lochner of Long Grove; five grandchildren, Christopher, Colyn and Kale Dean and Chloe and Colt Lochner; and one sister, Kathy Thomas of Des Moines.

Loren was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother-in-law, John Thomas.

So sad that Loren is gone. We lost a good one! We grew up in the Blue Grass area. Elementary, Jr. High, Sr. High at Dav. West, also had great times in 4-H. Always humble, friendly, and just fun to be around. We live in central Iowa, so didn't get to see him much the last 40 years. It's nice to hear he had such good friends and co-workers. The family sounds like a blast. I can imagine the good times he had with JoEllen, the kids and grands. Rest in peace, Loren.

It was so sad to hear of Loren's passing Being a Blus Grass boy we all spent our time with Loren and his family His mother was my teacher and my wife even got to know him when he had horses and she adored him. He always had a wonderful attitude and a huge smile on his face I got to see him last spring when he was taking cattle to summer south of our place and he stopped and we chatted for a bit and it was just like playing ball when we were kids again. He will be greatly missed, just a gentle and kind hearted man

I got to know Loren while we were teammates on the West High basketball team. What a terrific guy! He was a friend to everyone! A dear friend of mine back in Davenport alerted me to his passing. I'm sure he will be greatly missed by many, many people! Rest in peace now, Loren

Have great memories of my cousin. Our families lived close to each other in Blue Grass. Once we moved to Davenport I would still see him at West High School. He would come to our home to eat before having an out of town basketball game. So many stories. Our sympathies to JoEllen and family. He will be truly missed.

So sorry to hear about the loss of Loren. He was a childhood friend of mine, a gentle giant with a good soul. I spent a lot of days on his farm, from baling hay to just horsing around. It was always entertaining to see him and his father get into heated shouting matches that always cooled off before going in to have lunch that Ruth had prepared. Was really proud of his accomplishments with winning the state basketball championship. Send my deepest sympathy to his family and friends.
