Richard Fleischman Obituary

Richard J. Fleischman

June 15, 1934 - September 14, 2025

Richard J. "Whitey" Fleischman, 91, of Davenport, died Sunday, September 14, 2025, at his home surrounded by family.

A memorial mass will be offered at 11 a.m., Thursday, September 25, 2025, at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 4105 N. Division Street, Davenport. Burial will be in the Rock Island National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. The family will greet friends Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. in the gathering space at church. Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Victory Foundation, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, MercyOne-Genesis Hospice or the Shriners Children's Hospital. Halligan-McCabe-DeVries Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Richard John Fleischman was born on June 15, 1934, in Davenport, a son of Anton and Catherine (Ries) Fleischman. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. Dick proudly served our country in the Air Force, stationed primarily in North England.

He was united in marriage to Linda Wehr on August 24, 1964, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Davenport. They have shared over 61 years of marriage together.

Dick retired as a civil engineer from the Rock Island District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers after 34 years in 1994. During his career with the Corps of Engineers, he worked on numerous water resource development studies and projects in the Upper Mississippi River Basin. He was a proud member of the Society of American Military Engineers.

Dick was a man of many passions. He enjoyed golfing, biking, gardening, dancing, and keeping his yard immaculate. He was a big fan of baseball, America's pastime, and was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, well as a lifelong Iowa Hawkeye fan, who rooted for his teams win or lose.

He was a loyal friend, and a group of lifelong friends meant the world to him. Together, they enjoyed playing cards for over 50 years. Dick was known as the "BEST" gin player in the Quad Cities, and, he would never pass up a good game of euchre. He was also a member of Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He volunteered for the Greenway habitat for a number of years, planting over 1,000 trees in the City of Davenport.

While his career brought him great pride, Dick considered his family to be his greatest accomplishment. He fell in love at first sight with a young lady who would walk through his neighborhood with a tennis racquet, and he went on to marry that same young lady, Linda. It was a charming tale, though he would later discover she didn't even play tennis. Linda was the love of his life.

Those left to honor his memory are his wife, Linda, Davenport; children and their spouses, Tera (Jeffrey) Hill, Bettendorf, Anne (Jim Stiman) Fleischman, Rock Island, Jon Fleischman, Davenport, and Joseph (April) Fleischman, Des Moines; grandchildren, Baylor (Megan) Hill, Parker Hill, Barrett Hill, Zachary Fleischman, Braelyn Fleischman, JJ Fleischman, and Madison Fleischman; a brother, John "Jack" (JoAnne) Fleischman, Davenport; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings, Ruth Testroet, Anthony Fleischman, and Catherine Freund. May they rest in peace.
