John Ernest Hoaglin

1926 - 2017

Rancho Bernardo John Ernest Hoaglin, 91, passed from this life on December 15, 2017. He was born in Grand Rapids, MI, one of 10 brothers and sisters. John served over 20 years in the Marine Corps. He was a 1st Sergeant in the Marine 1st Division and fought in heavy combat during World War II and Korea. He also served the City of San Diego for 25 years in a number of facility management roles, most notable, as general manager of San Diego Stadium and San Diego Police Headquarters. Once described by the City Manager as "the hardest working employee for the City of San Diego," John was known for his strong work ethic and friendly demeanor. John loved his family and supported the activities of his children, be it coaching baseball, softball or helping out with Y Indian Guides, Girl or Boy Scouts, he was always their number one fan. After retirement, he was very active in VFW Post 7766 in Rancho Bernardo. John was predeceased by his wife of 62 years in 2014, Ruth Alice (Falls) Hoaglin. They were married in Rome, Italy when Ruth worked for the State Dept. Foreign Service and John was stationed at the U.S. Embassy with the USMC. He is survived by his three children, Greg Hoaglin (Diana), Judy Thomas (Scott) and Mark Hoaglin (Lynn); and three grandchildren, Stephanie Thomas, Michael and Patrick Hoaglin. A memorial service and light lunch will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2018, at 11:00 am, at Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 2696 Melbourne Dr., San Diego 92123.
