Then Captain Counts was my first commanding officer when I was assigned to the USS Chicago as missile officer. What an honor to have known him and to have had his mentorship as a young naval officer. We all have been blessed by his presence.... whether as a new officer under his command or as a family member. He was the type of leader that praised you if you did well and didn't have to say a word if you messed up because you felt that YOU were letting HIM down.... nothing needed to be said. Best to the entire family and a special thought for Mrs. Counts, Ashlie and Ron. I am confident that you made him happy and very proud. God Bless.

I had the pleasure of steaming with RADM Counts for three days as he embarked for a "Tiger Cruise" on his son-in-law's command, USS Philippine Sea (CG-58). As the XO, I knew to not pass up the opportunity to learn from a great Sailor. After a very short time I recognized that the Navy got it right and he clearly earned his stars, years after retiring he was still a leader.
Kim and I send our heartfelt condolences to Ashlie and Ron and the rest of the family.

I had the interesting opportunity to meet and talk with RADM Counts while working as a receptionist at Young Buick Pontiac Cadillac.I saw his name on a customer file and told the cashier I would like to meet the gentleman. He came up to my desk a bit puzzled where I explained I had never met anyone named "Counts"outside of my father's family, and that I, too was from Oklahoma (McAlester). We had a good talk and a few chuckles. He told me he was the CO at the Naval Ammunitions Depot, McAlester, who turned over the Naval facility to the Army. Both my aunt and my mother had worked there during WWII. He was
a delightful gentleman and it was my pleasure to meet him...as one Counts to another.

With love and prayers for all of you who will miss him dearly. I'm thankful for all of the love RADM Counts poured into his daughter, my sister in spirit, Ashlie. Blessings to all who knew the man who lived the life well-lived.

I still remember the first time we met him. It was a party at Ron and Ashlie's, his first words were "It's great to meet you, what are you drinking." It was always interesting and fun talking with him. We are sorry we are unable to attend the services but are thoughts and prayers are with Ashlie and the family.

My husband, VADM Tim LaFleur worked for Admiral Counts back in 1975 as the Flag Lieutenant on CCDG 5. He was a wonderful man! I even called him Uncle Stanley, but not to his face!! He and Bette treated me like a daughter during that time as my Mother had passed away that tour! We so enjoyed the comraderie from CCDG 5, that the Navy was so famous for, back in the day! God speed, Admiral! Enjoy the peace and comfort of being home with your Father, in Heaven!

Admiral Counts was my first CO on my first duty station in USS Chicago, a great ship made all the better by his leadership. Little did I know then that I would follow in his footsteps as a SWO and a proud member of the Naval Weapons Engineering community. He was a true pioneer in building the best weapons systems in the world. Our prayers are with him, and with his wife, daughter Ashley and her husband Ron.

RADM Counts was my CO on USS Chicago in 1971 when I was a young Ensign. He led by example, obviously having great fun with his ship and his career. He consequently made it fun for us as junior officers, bringing us to up to the bridge and giving us the chance to drive the ship and become OOD's. He's the first senior officer I knew that made me entertain the thought of staying in the Navy. May he rest now, and may God's peace be his wife Bette and their family at this time.

RADM Counts was my CO on USS Towers--I was a LTJG and navigator during a 1966 WESTPAC deployment. During that time, I learned quite a lot from Captain Counts. It was a pleasure to serve under his command, and Towers was a terrific ship during his watch.
My Condolences---
