Doris Sutton, age 100, passed away on January 5, 2021, in her home in La Jolla. Doris was born in Patterson, New Jersey, on March 25, 1920, and raised in New York City with her parents William Irving Nichols and Elizabeth Liss Nichols, and her brother, Henry.Doris was a Harry Conover Model in New York City in the 1940s, where she met her husband Paul Sutton, a physicist and naval officer in World War II. They were married on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1946. They had two daughters, Pamela and Valerie.Doris was a prolific writer of poetry, published first at age eleven in the Miami Herald. Using the pen name "DN Sutton," she was the author of seven books, including four poetry books: "Love Poems for the Romantic Heart," "Death Poems for the Grieving Heart," "Psalms for Life Living," and Perceptions, Poems for a Time of Terror." Her three novels, described as "romantic fairy-tales for grown-ups," were "Romantic Tales From Old Mulvedania," "The Carolinian Chronicles" and "At The Bend Of The Road."See

On this theme, she developed and taught a college course entitled "The Presentation of Self," which she taught, under the name "Donna Nichols" at Brooklyn College in Brooklyn, at Fordham University in New York City, at Canisius College in Buffalo, New York, and at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pennsylvania. She inspired her students to bring beauty and joy into their lives. The course was presented over 60 times at colleges and universities throughout New York and Pennsylvania, from 1946-1959.Doris developed and taught a second course, "How To Develop Your Personality and Become an Effective Conversationalist," presented in a series of YWCAs in Binghamton, New York, and other cities, in 1957, mentioned in the Binghamton Press. Trained for the theater, she was a poetry editor and active in radio publicity and public relations, working for China Relief during World War II.In the 1950s, her husband Paul's job as a physicist researching the properties of glass brought the family to Corning, New York, while Paul worked at Corning Glass Works, and later, in 1959, the family moved to Newport Beach, California, where Paul became the director of Physics & Chemistry at Ford Aerospace.A former student of psychology at Barnard College, Columbia University in New York City, Doris completed her Bachelor's Degree at the University of California Riverside (UCR) in 1963, and then a Master's Degree in Drama and Playwriting from California State University at Fullerton, in 1970.In the 1990s, Paul and Doris returned to the East Coast, residing in the Fort Lauderdale area, Florida, where they helped their daughter Pamela raise her twin sons for ten years. Paul's love for California moved them back in 1996, when they settled in La Jolla, living with daughter Valerie and traveling the world for several years.A stroke that left Doris paralyzed on her right side since 2011 did not keep her from writing. Dictating her three novels, one by one, they were published from 2013 to 2017, the last one at age 97. Her poetry was also published in her later years, the final one making it to print in 2018.Following Paul's passing in 2019, Doris remained in her residence in La Jolla with daughters Valerie and Pamela, and caregivers, enjoying visits from her great-grandchildren.Doris will be remembered forever for her loving, kind smile and for inspiring so many.
