Wallace McCoy Obituary

Wallace W. McCoy
1931 - 2021
RANCHO SANTA FE
Dr. Wallace Warren McCoy, an Ophthalmic Surgeon, a visionary entrepreneur, and real estate developer, died Monday, November 15, at the Scripps Encinitas Hospital. He was being treated for Arteritis and died from complications.
Wallace was born and raised in Los Angeles, living in the Wilshire Blvd area where he would go rabbit hunting as a boy at the La Brea Tar Pits. He graduated from Medical School from the University of Southern California and studied in London at the Moorfield's Eye Hospital, which is ranked the best in the world to study ophthalmology.
He had his medical practice in Glendale, CA, and then moved to Rancho Santa Fe in 1974 to retire. He built the first medical office building in Encinitas, CA, the Encinitas Medical Center,
He was one of the original owners of the property that developed into Southpointe Farms in Rancho Santa Fe. He developed property in Arizona and owned property in Bonsall that later became a shopping center. Wallace bought 64 acres of farmland in Del Mar and developed it into Show Park of San Diego, which became a nationally acclaimed Equestrian center. His "Dr. McCoy Sunscreen" was used by many at the RSF Club and other golf clubs. In 1994, he became a partner in Cavan Crystals in Cavan, Ireland. In 1997, he bought a ranch in the Sierra Foothills above Fresno and planted a vineyard with six different Rhone Valley varietals, which produced great wines and were bottled as Wallace Wines. He had a great sense of humor and loved to tease his friends.
Wallace is survived by Connie, his wife of 23 years, his two sons, John and James, John's wife, Mallory, and two granddaughters, Scotland and Quinn. His sister, Janet Robyns, and her husband, George, of Eugene, Oregon, survives him as well as several nieces and a nephew.

I knew Wallace longer than anyone else living. He was my big brother for over 80 years. Always a giant in my eyes, he lived as he wished and created many interesting projects that brought him pleasure.

Our family wasn't very close so I missed his presence in my life while I was growing up. We communicated more lately and that was a treasure. He was certainly his own person and enjoyed good laughs.

Glad he had the love of his life, Connie, for so many years. I continue to think of him often and wish we had had more time lately.

Connie, James & Johnny, as well as Liz and Jenny .... I love you all and my most sincere condolences. Kicking myself, as I was in front of his home a few weeks ago looking at all the improved homes and architectural features in South Pointe, while they were oiling the streets. The neighborhood has come a long way since i chaired the HOA and Archit. Committee in the early days there. Didn't want to track oil onto Wally's pristine driveway.

I will miss Wally, as a fellow curmudgeon and long time friend since 1975 but I still have a case of his Wallace wine to drink. Unfortunately, no Domaine Romanee Conti, as we drank that entire 1967 case of his coveted but off year wine, after James' baptism or christening ceremony. I could never beat him in tennis as his spin was impossible to return. And of course I never beat him in gin rummy. I do hope to beat him in longevity and at 81 I still have a stretch to go. Wally actually bought my lunch once at Quail's Inn in San Marcos to counsel me on keeping my wife.....har har... I loved his bizarre sense of humor, practical joking and curmudgeoness. James, just remember what Napoleon Hill taught me, as I know you read the book. Whatever your mind can conceive, you can achieve....
