Barbara Hoon Obituary

RAPID CITY - Barbara B. Hoon, 77, longtime Rapid City resident, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 2004, at her residence. She was born Dec. 6, 1926, in Carman, Manitoba, Canada, to Douglas and Leonora (Davidson) Bruce. She moved to Rapid City with her family in 1939. She graduated from Rapid City High School in 1944, and from St. John's McNamara School of Nursing in 1948. Barbara married John K. Hoon in Rapid City in 1948 and the couple resided in Lincoln, Neb., prior to moving back to Rapid City in 1951. She worked for the Department of Health for 24 years as a tuberculosis field nurse and as a communicable disease specialist. During those years she was active in local, state and national nursing organizations. She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church where she had served as a member of the vestry and also as a Lay Eucharistic Visitor. She is survived by her son, J. Bruce Hoon, Rapid City; her daughter, Susan Hoon, Las Vegas, Nev. and two granddaughters, Chelsey and Hailey Cullen; her daughter, Jane Hoon, Longmont, Colo.; her sister, Marion Eskelson, San Diego, Calif.; her sister-in-law, Helen Hoon, Boulder, Colo.; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, John, in 1984. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 6, at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church. Private graveside services will be held at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis at a later date. A memorial has been established to St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, Hospice of the Hills and Habitat for Humanity. Osheim-Catron Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
