Clement Zambon Obituary

RAPID CITY - Clement "Clem" Zambon, 82, Rapid City, died at Rapid City Regional Hospital Friday, August 17, 2007, following complications from cancer surgery. He was born at home in Lead, on March 28, 1925, to Clemente and Rina (Bonato) Zambon. Clem was truly a one of a kind individual and experienced all life had to offer with an enthusiastic spirit and energy that only a few can offer. Clem was attending Lead High School when he was drafted in 1943. He served overseas for 20 months in the Asiatic-Pacific Operations in New Guinea and the Phillipines, in addition to serving in the Pentagon. Following an Honorable Discharge, Lt. Zambon completed high school and went on to graduate from the University of South Dakota in 1950. After graduation, Clem married his wife of 57 years, Marian Ahrendt of Vermillion. His business career started Oct. 11, 1950, at the RCC Western Store, where he mastered the business ropes of sales, merchandising, marketing, advertising and management. Clem was instrumental in growing the business to a corporation of 21 stores during a career spanning over 50 years. With incredible dedication, he devoted considerable energy and time to varied hobbies as they moved from old guns and fishing to bottle digging and tokens as well as other antiques, where he was recognized as an authority. During the entire period, Clem maintained a high sense of humor while creating a legendary style. Clem was a former Mason and Elks Lodge member. Survivors include his wife Marian Zambon, Rapid City, five children: Deborah Melvin and her husband, John, Chandler, Ariz., Cindy Wellman and her husband Bill, Lisa Zambon, and Julie Ellis and her husband Steve, all of Rapid City, and Clement Dean Zambon and his wife, Glenna, Buffalo Gap; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Rose Kovacevich and her husband Jim, and a brother Del Zambon and his wife, Jean, all of Whitewood. Clem deeply touched all of those who knew him with infectious enthusiasm. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today at the Osheim-Catron Funeral Home. Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, August 21, at the First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Charla McCaskell officiating. Interment, with military honors provided by the Rushmore VFW Post 1273 Honor Guard, will be at Black Hills National Cemetery. A memorial has been established. Marian, So sorry to see Clem go! I lost a dear, great, fun friend. Clem and I talked often about "it's later than you think", a motto he said is written in stone above the Pentagon in DC. He wondered how you would fair if he went first. His worry was abated when Lisa came to live with you. Clem also had a great concern for Clement. That anxiety was also relieved when Clement got married. I guess it is true "all things work together for good."
Clem's friend and always will be.

WHAT A DEAR AND CHARMING MAN THAT I HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF KNOWING. I THINK OF CLEM AS A WONDERFUL FRIEND WHO ALWAYS HAD WONDERFUL WORDS TO ALL THAT CAME IN CONTACT WITH HIM. MY SYMPATHY TO YOU ALL.

Clem will be missed by many, he was a friend to all he can in contact with and would make everyone feel as they were special and that takes a person such as Clem. We missed him greatly, the minute he would walk in the office there was an energy that had been lacking before. He made RCC a special place to shop and I missed him greatly when he retired. God Bless his family and friends in their time of sorrow. Many will miss the beloved Clem. Dr. Gerti Janss and Staff send their condolences to the family.

My Grandfather passed away in the 1950's and my family could'nt afford a suit to bury him in.Clem knew my Grandfather, liked him and when he heard that he was going to be buried without a suit Clem just said no way.Clem brought this suit to my Grandma and would'nt take no for a answer. My Grandfather was buried in that suit.If that does'nt speak volumes about a man,I don't know what would.
Thanks Clem,You won't ever be forgotten in our family.Besides where the heck am I going to get my tokens from now? Bill

I met Clem for the first time in 1964 at RCC. He came up to me and asked if he could help me. I was looking for a gift for my dad and I found exactly what I wanted - Clem didn't know my dad until a few months later. Everytime after that when I went to the store to buy something for dad - Clem knew exactly what to show me and in the styles and colors my dad liked. He has been and always will remain a very exciting personality in my great book of all the people I met in my life. He and my dad are both in the great beyond and I am sure sharing stories of the great lives they led here on earth. My deepest sympathies to Clem's family. My prayers and thoughts are with you.

I think of Clem every time I shop at RCC. He will be so terribly missed. He was the same as a grandparent to me. Always a smile for everyone! My thoughts are with your family.

You're absolutely right about Clem's "infectious" personality. Clem would stop in our little Antique Store in Newell periodically looking for bottles or tokens. I always knew when Clem walked in because the energy level in the room picked up immediately. He was such a joy to visit with at the store and at auctions. Those were the customers I missed when we closed KD Antiques & Collectibles.

Memories to me of Clem....When Clem and my father used to go bottle digging together. I remember a trip to the black hills with my husband(Gary) and my parents. We camped in the hills and Clem came out in the rain searching for our campsite. He found us and knocked on the tent. We were all in bed because it was raining out. We couldn't believe he found us in the rain. What a guy. He was always so uplifting and we will miss him greatly. I know he has joined my father in heaven and they will again be digging bottles together. We are so so sorry Marion and family of your great loss. Love you Beverly & Gary Messler

What a wonderful man. I so enjoyed my conversations with Clem over at cup of coffee as he talked antique guns with Leo at his resturant and when I would visit Rapid City and stop by the store at the mall. Always a caring person. He lived life honorably.
