Darrell Hackens Obituary

NEW UNDERWOOD -- Darrell Hackens, 71, lifelong New Underwood area resident, died Friday, December 8, 2006 at his home. He was born June 2, 1935 in New Underwood to Kenneth and Kathryn (Gilles) Hackens. He graduated from New Underwood High School and later attended college in Sul Ross, TX for a year. He married Laura Johnson on June 4, 1957 in Rapid City. He ranched North of New Underwood his entire life and recently retired in 2003. He was very involved in community activities. He was an avid horseman and enjoyed roping and was a member of the New Underwood Roping Club. He was also a member of the ELKS Club, Buckaroos, Moose Club and volunteer fire department. He was a devoted rancher and enjoyed working in his shop when he had a chance. He is survived by his wife, Laura M. Hackens, New Underwood, a son, Dean (Tammy) Hackens, New Underwood, 4 daughters, Jean Hackens, Rapid City, Melody (Earl) Smith, Union Center, Lana (Howard) Hughes, New Underwood, Beverly (Larry) Larsen, Caputa; 9 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; his mother, Katherine Hackens, New Underwood; and 20 nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Pauline Matsushita. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, December 13, 2006 at the New Underwood School Gymnasium with Pastor Harold Delbridge and Pastor Jim Harberdt officiating. Interment will follow in the Viewfield Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, December 12, 2006 at Behrens-Wilson Funeral Home. Memorials are requested to benefit the Hospice of the Hills, Viewfield Community Cemetery or Viewfield Building Fund. Condolences may be conveyed to the family at behrenswilson.com.
