Donald Polovich Obituary
Donald Polovich
Donald Polovich passed away peacefully the morning of January 14, 2023 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law in Ruidoso, NM. Don has spent his final months in Ruidoso as well as Puerto Penasco, Sonora, Mexico but Rapid City will always be the place he loved to call home.
A complete obituary will be written with the assistance of his friends, in an effort to illustrate many of the things Don accomplished during his lifetime.
A celebration of Don's life will be held in the fall, his favorite time of year to explore the Black Hills.

To record the images that make a community visible to the people of the future is a remarkable commitment to an art. How many times did his name and work appear in the Rapid City Journal? Thousands. In the day and age when anybody can take a snapshot with their phone, the space for photographic art is limited. Don Polovich was one of the last of an age, the dedicated newspaper photographer.

Sorry to hear this. I very much enjoyed and respected Don during my 7 years at the Journal newsroom. He was a true photojournalist who honed and loved his craft, and who taught me many things about newspaper photography. He covered all the major news stories in the Hills from 1970 til he retired. I have to laugh now about one of the jokes he said, "I´d like my ashes spread around the newsroom when I´m gone." Such a great sense of humor. He will be missed.
