John Alfred "Jack" Magstadt

1929 - 2025

John Alfred "Jack" Magstadt, 96, of Rapid City, SD, passed away at Luxe Life Senior Living in Norman, OK on Monday, August 18, 2025. Jack was born in Rapid City on April 4, 1929, to parents Milton "Mox" Magstadt and Hazel Rousseau. He graduated from Rapid City High School in 1947, enlisted in the Navy later that summer, fulfilled his enlistment, was discharged, and then called back to serve in the Korean War. He married his first wife Sonya Tschida in 1953. Together they had two sons, Michael "Mike," Norman OK and Mark, Lake City FL. Skills Jack learned in the Navy opened doors for a career first with Western Electric as a lineman and later with Northwestern Bell Telephone in many positions - starting in Rapid City, then moving to Gettysburg, Aberdeen, and finally Sioux Falls. He retired as a Planning Engineer in the mid 1980s. Jack and Sonya had many happy years in retirement - living in Sioux Falls and as snow birds in Clearwater FL. After Sonya's death in 2006, Jack married Monta Lea Campbell Cramer in 2010. They lived in Rapid City with Monta Lea passing away in 2015. Jack enjoyed most sports but golf was his passion, especially at Westward Ho Country Club in Sioux Falls. He was loved by those that knew him and will be remembered for his quick wit, sense of humor, and easy going disposition. Jack is survived by his sons Mike (Midge) and Mark (Tammy), 7 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandson, nieces Tracy Parkison and Debby Willis, and nephew Danny Den Beste. The military funeral honors committal ceremony will be held at the Black Hills National Cemetery on Monday, September 15, 2025 at 9:00 a.m. Condolences may be sent in Care of Mike Magstadt, 613 Summit Bend, Norman OK 73071.
