Jimmie Funell Obituary

RAPID CITY - Jimmie L. Funell, 67, Rapid City, died Sunday, June 26, 2011, at his home.

Jimmie was born Oct. 20, 1943, in Sturgis to Oscar and Sylvia (Heaton) Funell. He was raised on the family ranch and graduated from Sturgis High School. Following his honorable service as a jet mechanic in the U.S. Navy, Jimmie returned home. He was a dirt track racing thrill seeker. He could be found at Black Hills Speedway on Friday night, Gillette on Saturday and sometimes Huron or anywhere there was a race. Jimmie owned and operated Fast Lane Fabrications and later established Alleycat Engineering Inc. in Rapid City where he continued his lifelong focus of building and fabricating fast race cars.

On July 14, 2010, he married Cheri Mercy Johnson in Reno, Nev.

Jimmie would like to be remembered for his faith in God and Country; and perhaps a little racing.

Survivors include his wife, Cheri Funell, Rapid City; son, Michael Funell, Lead; daughter, Michelle (Michael) Qualls, Billings, Mont.; stepson, Darwin (Connie) Hellekson, Phillip; sister, Beverly (Pat) Urbaniak, Sturgis; and numerous grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John Funell; his previous wife, Deanna; and his beloved dog, Jack.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 29, at First Presbyterian Church in Sturgis, with the Rev. Denzel Nonhof and Pastor Harold Delbridge officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery near Sturgis, with military honors by the Sturgis Veteran's Honor Guard.

Kinkade Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
