John was certainly one of the finest men I have met. A sincere unassuming man. One would never know of the wonderful things he had done by just meeting him because he was so humble. Alway ready with a compliment and certainly a champion for family life and development of our youth. The world was blessed by the example John set for others.

Becki Clarke R.N.

July 18, 2005

I was fortunate to be able to get to know John over the last year of his life. I just recently graduated from USD as an RN. John taught me more things about nursing than any nursing instructor or book ever could have.

He taught me about the most important aspects of nursing, and that is compassion and caring for all people. That's what John was all about...helping people. I remember sitting with him when the national news was covering the Tsunami disaster. I could see the pain that he felt for the victims. He said, "I wish there was some way I could help them!" As we all know, that's just the way he was. He hated to hear of anyone hurting.

When I found myself struggling to get through school,he taught me the importance of discipline. He said, "not only children need discipline, we all do."

As I start my career as a registered nurse, I believe that John will be with me through every patient that I encounter. He taught me the art of CARING. And THAT'S nursing!

July 18, 2005

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of John. My deepest sympathy to the family. John was my God Father as he and my father worked together back in 1941 when I was born. A few years ago I made contact with John by sending him a letter after one of his many deserving community awards. I was most surprised and humbled when I received a phone call from him a few days later. He was truly a kind and gentle man even though I never really knew him it was rewarding to know of him and the many rewarding things he did for society and Rapid City. He was truly a caring person. My parents who are deceased were Art and Calla Sullivan of Spearfish.

I see in the Rapid City Journal that Rapid City has lost a great and true friend. My father was in the legislature at the same time as John and he shared an apartment in the St. Charles hotel with John and Boyd Leedom. They were all good men and enjoyed their shared discussions and debates. In fact, John offered Dad a chance to become a partner in his plans to move the charter of the Hill City bank to Rapid City and make it a Rapid City Bank. Dad said because of federal regulations it couldn't be done. Ha! He didn't know John. John was an astute business man but honest and fair. Dad and I were entertained at dinner in his small home (he had yet to achieve the success of his later life) by him and his first wife and two small children. He shared his success with his family, friends and Rapid City. He was a special man and so was Boyd (Leedom) and so was my Dad (former Supreme Court Justice Fred R. Winans) May they all rest in peace.
