Kathleen Maguire Obituary

Kathleen Diane Maguire

March 13, 1956 - January 22, 2025

Kathleen Diane Maguire (Morris), 68, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family, on January 22, 2025, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.

Born on March 13, 1956, in Alexandria, Virginia, Kathy was the youngest of four children to Joseph and Lorraine Morris. At a young age, Kathy moved with her mother and siblings to Minot, North Dakota, where they lived in a converted boxcar during her childhood. Looking back, she attributed much of her strength, resilience, and deep love for her family to overcoming the hardships of her youth. Kathy and her mom later moved to Rapid City, South Dakota in 1970. Kathy selflessly cared for her mother, a role she embraced for decades, first in Minot and later in Rapid City until her mother's passing.

Kathy attended Rapid City Central High School, where she met and later married Mike Maguire. Though their initial relationship started with playful animosity, it was not long before Kathy's infectious smile, laughter, and her love for music, art, and dancing won Mike's heart. The couple began dating in 1975, during their sophomore year in college. Kathy studied at the University of Wyoming in Laramie, where she graduated with a degree in Sociology and English in 1978. After graduation, Kathy and Mike returned to Rapid City, where they started their life together.

On October 19, 1979, Kathy married Mike in Rapid City, and together they built a beautiful life filled with love and three wonderful children: Courtney, Colin, and Carrie. As a stay-at-home mom, Kathy's number one priority was to raise her children, ensuring they had the foundation to spread their wings and make their own journey later in life. She was an amazing, loving, and nurturing mom to her children. Her unwavering strength in the face of life's challenges served as a profound source of inspiration for her children.

Kathy's caring nature extended beyond her immediate family in numerous avenues. She was a second mother to many of her children's friends, always showering them with gifts and love, and she helped as a CASA volunteer, where she volunteered her time to advocate for children in need.

Kathy had a deep passion for art and design, evident in her impeccable sense of style, her beautifully designed home and cabin at Terry Peak, and her talent for creating floral arrangements. Later in life, Kathy pursued her design dream by starting her own small business, Moss and Metal, where she created and sold custom silk floral wreaths to customers across the country. Her dream cabin at Terry Peak also became a sanctuary where Kathy had her studio, a place where she built her wreaths with passion and creativity. It truly was her happy place.

Traveling was another love of Kathy's life, and she created lasting memories while visiting various states and countries with her husband, family, and friends. Whether at home or abroad, Kathy could always be found with a book in one hand and a glass of wine in the other. Along with traveling, she always showcased her love for music. Whether she traveled specifically to go watch her favorite band, Coldplay, perform, whom she saw four times with her husband and children or sat at a bar and listened to live music or a DJ, if she had music she was beaming. Her love for music transcended to the dance floor. She never missed an opportunity to hit the dance floor, regardless of where she was or what people might think. You could find her swing dancing to country music with Mike or listening to a famous DJ dancing with her hands in the air. She was young at heart, always knew how to have a good time and was the life of the party.

Kathy continued her motherly role as "Mimi" to five grandsons, Zayden, Benjamin, William, Callum, and Niall. She supported them through school and sports and enjoyed all the weekends together at Angostura Lake and their cabin in the hills, watching them grow. She was without a doubt a professional spoiler of grandchildren.

Kathy is survived by her loving husband, Mike; her three children, Courtney (Bryce) Miner, Colin (Meghan) Maguire, Carrie (Bryan) McCartney; her five grandsons, Zayden, Benjamin, William, Callum, and Niall; and her two sisters, Karen (Albee) Allstadt and Donna (Dana) Gibbs. Kathy was preceded in death by her brother, Henry; and her mother and father, Lorraine, and Joseph.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Boys and Girls Club of Rapid City.

Kathy will be remembered for her unwavering love, generosity, and her ability to make everyone feel special. Her legacy will live on in the hearts of all those who knew her.

Visitation will be held for Kathleen at Kirk Funeral Home on Thursday, January 30, 2025, from 5 to 7 p.m. Her Funeral Mass will be held at The Cathedral on Friday, January 31, 2025, at 11 a.m.
