Marjorie Mortimer Obituary

BELLE FOURCHE - Private family Memorial Service for Marjorie Mortimer, age 95, of Belle Fourche will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2005, at Pine Slope Cemetery in Belle Fourche. A public Time of Remembrance will be held at the Belle Fourche Community Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 15, 2005. Marjorie Caldwell Mortimer 95 died Sunday morning, November 21, 2004, at Rapid City Regional Hospital. Marjorie Ethyl Caldwell was born in Brookings, South Dakota, June 26, 1909, the daughter of William Andrew, and Ethyl Caldwell. She graduated from Brookings High School, and South Dakota State College. Following graduation, she did postgraduate work on the East Coast in music and choral directing. She taught in various communities within South Dakota. Marjorie married George Freeman Mortimer on August 16, 1938 in Brookings. The couple then made their home in Belle Fourche, where Marjorie was active in teaching, choral directing, voice and piano instruction. She was very active in the Republican Party, P.E.O., and the Congregational Church, where she was the music director. She was appointed to the South Dakota Board of Regents, where she was able to continue to serve furthering the interests of education. She is survived by two sons: James D. and Lettie Mortimer, and Sam L. and Karen Mortimer, both of Rapid City; four grandchildren, Jeb and Kristie Mortimer, Scott and Shan Mortimer Nelson, Luke and Cari Mortimer, and Katie Mortimer, and there is one great-grandchild, Darma Mortimer. A sister, Phyllis Thayer, resides in Madison, South Dakota. Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband, George Freeman Mortimer in 1999, plus her parents, and four siblings. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to P.E.O. music scholarship fund, c/o Lettie Mortimer, 4321 Timberlane Place, Rapid City, SD 57702. Services are under the direction of the Funeral Home of the Northern Hills, Belle Fourche.
