He attended Lead Public Schools from 1932 to 1943, and was drafted out of high school to serve in the United States Navy in November of 1943. He attended boot camp in Farragut, Idaho; from there he went to machinist mate school at the Ford River Rogue Plant in Dearborn, Michigan. After graduation, he went to San Francisco, CA, to await shipment overseas. While there he transferred into the Seabees and was sent to Johnston Island to join CBMU 554.
