Patrick Coyne Obituary

RAPID CITY - Dr. Patrick Joseph Coyne, Rapid City, passed away shortly after 1 a.m. Thursday, June 10, 2010, at Rapid City Regional Hospital, due to complications following heart surgery. He was born March 6, 1944, in Mitchell, to Leo and Dorothy (Hohn) Coyne. He graduated from Notre Dame High School in Mitchell in 1962. He received a BS in Chemical Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in 1966. After working in the refining and chemical industry for five years, he attended the University of Minnesota, receiving his DDS degree in 1975. He spent 35 years in private practice; two years in Huron and 33 years in Rapid City. Patrick married the love of his life, Peggy (Hohm) on Nov. 26, 1966. They enjoyed 44 years of an inseparable partnership that was aspired and envied by many. Dr. Coyne served on the SDSMT Foundation Board, was president of the Black Hills District Dental Society and president of the SDDA, and was currently the Speaker of the House for the SDDA. He also served as president of the State Board of Dentistry and was a member of the Board of Directors for Delta Dental South Dakota. He was recently awarded the Distinguished Service Award at the SDDA Annual Session. In recent years he had developed a zeal for police and dental forensics. He was a proud graduate of the Citizens Police Academy and an enthusiastic participant of the Rapid City Police Auxiliary. He and his brother Jim enjoyed a mutual hobby of target shooting and the art of firearms. He is remembered most by his friends and family for his unparalleled patience and kindness. All who knew him, even for a moment, were left with the resonance of his modest sense of humor and infectious smile. He and Peggy had a love for "creative cooking" and enjoyed 33 years in a local gourmet club. His true passion was creating family memories. Ski trips, scuba diving, sky diving, white water rafting, and last but not least, the mandatory annual family trip packed in the R.V., just to name a few. "So many adventures, so little time." Patrick had a fantastic ability to balance the attention to detail throughout his personal and professional life, "most professional, decent, warm, caring individual I have known…" Patrick was so proud of his family. Patients would ask about all the pictures and he would glow as he talked about his wife, children and grandchildren. He was the "best of the best" and will be sorely missed by so many. Patrick is survived by his wife, Peggy; daughter, Megan (George) Larson, Rapid City; two sons, Mikael (Karen) Mitcheom, Granite Bay, Calif., and Sean (Alicia) Coyne, Rapid City; nine grandchildren; two brothers, James Coyne, New York, and Mike Coyne, Brookings; three sisters, Eileen (Claire) Tystad, Gering, Neb., Carol (Roman) Pumper, Fort Myers, Fla., and Jean (Don) Culhane, Mitchell; and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service in remembrance of Patrick will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday, June 14, at Kirk Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. In lieu of flowers, the Patrick J. Coyne Memorial has been established at First Interstate Bank. His online guestbook is available at www.kirkfuneralhome.com.

Pat and I were "Green Beanie" members of the 1962 Freshman class at SDSM&T, and he was "my Dentist" for many years here in Rapid City---I actually looked forward to "going to the Dentist" because of his wonderful calming demeanor. He really was "the best of the best", and I hope that it brings his family much comfort in knowing how well-thought-of and loved he really was.

Dr. Coyne was my dentist all through my childhood. He was such a gentle and kind man. He was the first dentist I took my own children to. I was shocked to hear of his passing and my prayers and thoughts are with his family. God Bless.

I knew Pat in HS and remember his unique sense of humor. When I made an appointment with a Dental Group in the 70's I was surprised and delighted to find he would be our dentist. Pat was the epitome of good. My husband and I will truly miss him. Our prayers are with his family. He was the world's loss and Heaven's gain.

My most sincere condolances to Peggy and the rest of Pat's family. It's just not right that the best guys should go so early. -- "PC the pipe painter" was my roommate his last semester at Mines. Pat was fun to be around and he set an excellent example for those of us aspiring to be seniors one day.

I feel very fortunate to have worked with, been freinds with and known Pat for many years. He was truly a sensitive, compassionate and caring man. A person I will always "treasure" to have known.

Peggy, may God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

Pat was one of my best friends in college, a brother in Triangle Fraternity and the best man at my wedding. Although we did not see each other much after graduating from college, my thoughts were often with him. He will be missed greatly by his family, friends and community.
