Robert Pollock IV

Robert "Bob" Milton Pollock IV, 90, of Heritage Place at Good Samaritan Society in Rapid City, died on Tuesday, July 15, 2025. He will be greatly missed for his friendly smile and the warm manner with which he treated everyone he met.

Bob was born in 1934 in Warren, Ohio to Robert and Capetola Pollock.

He was artistic and creative at heart. Art was his favorite subject in high school, and his love of art carried him throughout schooling and his life. After graduating from McKinley High School, he joined the Army and had many adventures as a young man serving in Galveston, Texas and with the Fourth Armored Division in Germany.

Bob moved to Riverside, Calif. in 1962 and worked for the City of Riverside for 25 years, applying his considerable skills working with his hands to maintain county libraries and other buildings.

While in Riverside, Bob met the love of his life, Victoria "Vickie" Cappa Holmes, and married her in 1972. Bob often said that meeting Vickie was the best thing that ever happened to him. The love they shared for more than 50 years was an example for all.

Bob was a master woodcarver and belonged to several carving clubs in California, where he received awards and was recognized in the media. In Rapid City, he was a member of the Hay Camp Carvers. Bob was known for creating fanciful life-size carousel horses, which he believed were his greatest accomplishment. He also sculpted a wide variety of animals, which he displayed at the Central States Fair and throughout the Good Samaritan facility. Family members treasure intricate walking sticks, which Bob tailored to each person, weaving in humorous phrases.

Bob and Vickie retired and moved to Rapid City in 2001 to be near family. They enjoyed many friends, including those in the woodcarver's community and dinner clubs. They especially liked to attend theater and arts events. Bob and Vicki were, until recent years, active in the Emmanuel Episcopal Church. They were also strong supporters of the Suzie Cappa Art Center.

Bob is survived by nephews and nieces, Peter and JoVayne Cappa, David Cappa and Karen Menconi, Van Lindquist, and Laurel Cappa; cousins, Kim and Gene Hudyma; and many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his dear wife, Victoria, loving parents, and special nieces Suzie Cappa, Pam Lindquist, and Sallie Graham. Monument Hospital honored his service with a Hero's Walk and the family is grateful for his excellent care.

A Memorial Eucharist will be offered on Monday, July 21, 2025 at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, followed by a lunch and then entombment at Black Hills National Cemetery at 2:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the Suzie Cappa Art Center and Emmanuel Episcopal Church.
