Albert Burkhart Obituary


Albert Elijah "Hap" Burkhart, 90, Ontelaunee Township, died Dec. 29, 2010, at Kutztown Manor.

He was the husband of Bernice Frances (Homan) Burkhart, who died in 2002.

Born Jan. 24, 1920, in Reading, he was a son of the late John D. and Ida (Shearer) Burkhart.

Albert served in the U.S. Navy as a sailor on diesel submarines for 20 years, retiring in 1972.

Albert enjoyed "chucking."

Surviving are two children, Michael A. Burkhart, Ontelaunee Township; and Sally L. (Burkhart), husband of Clifford Ernst, Ruscombmanor Township.

Other survivors include two grandchildren, Melissa Lyn Burkhart, Reading; and Austin L. Ernst, Ruscombmanor Township.

Albert was predeceased by a brother, John; and seven sisters: Sally, Arlene, Peggy, Esther, Mary, Alice and Elsie.

Graveside services will be held Tuesday at noon at Walter R. Christ Funeral Home Inc., 3300 Kutztown Road, Laureldale. A visitation will be held one hour prior to services in the funeral home. Burial will be in Berks County Memorial Gardens, Maidencreek Township.
