He was married to Madge H. (Hoverter) Mengel. Arlen and Madge were married on October 26, 1957, in Olivet Presbyterian Church by Reverend Webb. They had celebrated 53 years of marriage.
Born in Blandon, he was the son of the late Robert and Mamie (Plucker) Mengel.
Arlen graduated from Muhlenberg High School in 1954. He earned a Chartered Property & Casualty Underwriter Designation (CPCU) on October 3, 1977.
Arlen then was employed in the insurance business for 40 years as an underwriter for several local insurance companies. For 23 years, he was owner and operator of Mengel Insurance Inc. of Blandon, retiring March 1, 1996.
Arlen was a member of Bethany Evangelical Con-gregational Church in Leesport.
Arlen was a former president of the Blandon Lions Club from July 1959 to June 1960.
Arlen was a member of Hugenot Lodge #377 F&AM, Reading Consistory and Rajah Shrine.
Surviving with his wife are one son, Craig A. Mengel, and wife, Sherri, Muhlenberg Township; and one daughter, Dawn L., wife of Jerry Matthews, Chester, Virginia.
There are four grandchildren: Paige and Bryan Matthews and Colin and Cameron Mengel.
Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family with burial in Maidencreek Cemetery, Blandon.

I had occasion to meet Mr. Mengel just one month ago. My father, a classmate of Arlen's, had just passed away and Arlen came to our memorial gathering to pay his respects. He seemed like a very decent fellow. So sad that he has joined my father...
