Guy Ketch Obituary

Guy R. Ketch Jr., 70, of Hamburg, died Saturday, January 30, 2016 in St. Joseph's Hospital. He was the husband of Patricia A. (Keating) Ketch to whom he was married to for 41 years. Guy was born in Summit, NJ, and was the son of the late Guy R. Ketch Sr. and Muriel A. (Hicks) Ketch.

He was a 1963 graduate of Ridge High School where he played quarterback. He graduated from Albright College in 1967.

He spent the next 39 years as a teacher in the Hamburg Area School District. He last taught American Cultures in the 8th grade in the Hamburg Area Middle School, retiring in 2006.

Mr. Ketch was very active in Hamburg Athletics working as an assistant varsity football and track coach for over 25 years. He was a member of the Berks County Interscholastic Athletic Association, Gold Leaf Member. Guy was a member of the Hamburg Area Education Association and last worked for the Hamburg Borough Recreation Department.

Guy was a wonderful man, father, husband, teacher, mentor and coach. He was a friend to all his students, players, and always had time to help a friend in need. He was always interested in all his former students and their successes. He probably went to more Hamburg class reunions than any other teacher. He was instrumental in making the Hamburg Area Middle School what it is today. He will be missed by all whose lives he touched.

In addition to his wife, Pat, he is survived by one daughter, Kristen M. Ketch, Temple, and Terry Halteman; one son, Michael G. Ketch, Helmetta, NJ, and Devon Hippeli; one brother, John L., husband of Joanne Ketch, Spring, Texas; and one sister, Diane K. Foster, Califon, NJ. Several nieces and nephews also survive him.

Funeral services will be on Saturday, February 6th, at 2:00 p.m., in the Bridge Church, 3561 Old 22, Hamburg, PA, 19526. A viewing will be held in the church from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to the Hamburg Area Education Foundation, 701 Windsor Street, Hamburg, PA 19526 or The American Heart Association, 212 East Broad Street, Bethlehem, PA. 18018.

The Burkey & Driscoll Funeral Home, Inc., Hamburg, is in charge of arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed at www.burkeydriscoll.com.

Mr. Ketch set a fine example of leaving a legacy as an example of who he was and will always be. He touched all he met with a caring and open heart. He showed great concern for his students and genuinely wanted to see them succeed. For me, Mr. Ketch made a point to pull me aside regularly as a student to ask how things were at home when he knew there were issues. Decades later I am still grateful he was there for me. Had someone not cared as he did, it is hard to say if things would have been different. His students were truly lucky to have such a fine example of a loving and caring teacher. Listening to the other teachers during the service, and speaking with them individually, spoke volumes to what a fine person he was and how he was such a genuine soul. While we will all miss him (I looked for him every year at the Hamburger Festival), we could plainly see the legacy he left behind. To know someone that leads by example as he did is such a blessing. He has taught us well, even in his passing. To his family: If meant this much to the community, I cannot even imagine the footprint he left on your hearts. May his memories fill your hearts and bring you comfort. May your hearts be at peace.

Will Rogers once said that you must judge a man's greatness by how much he will be missed. By that standard, Mr. Ketch was one of the greatest. He made a difference in so many student's lives, including mine. My condolences to his family. I hope you can find solace in knowing that he will always be an angel by your side.

My heartfelt condolences to Guy's family. The teaching community really has lost a teaching icon in Guy.Even though I never actually had him as my teacher, I had the pleasure of his acquaintance while I was in high school. He was only 9 years older than me when I graduated from Hamburg in 1972. It was always a pleasure to talk to him , he always took time for all the students even if he wasn't their teacher.Whether stopping to chat in the hall or during study periods. I remember him always saying to me to just call him Guy but I always called him Mr Ketch out of respect for him being a teacher. He was certainly a special person always going out of his way for the student body. He truly will be missed and remembered by all who had come in contact with him.

For many years, I was fortunate to have worked with Guy at HAHS. As a colleague and educator, he was outstanding and we were all lucky to have Guy at our side. I remember Guy as a true gentleman, in the truest sense of the word--always gracious, reliable, and supportive. His smile would brighten any room. Guy was selfless in his devotion to his students, spending hours, day after day, giving extra help. He was a marvel. The entire community has benefitted from his dedication and commitment. My condolences to his family. We are all heartbroken by this loss. He will be sorely missed.

Guy Ketch was a great teacher for me. After my school years he because a good friend. We had similar heart conditions and talked often. He was very concerned when I removed my daughter from school at last minute and I was heartbroken that I could not take the risk to tell him why. I hoped to tell him later but never had the chance. I will miss him! Bless your family and take care of them!

Mr. Ketch...you were my favourite teacher...ever! As adults when we would meet in town or on Aunt Annie's sidewalk, I would call you Mr. Ketch and you would say call me "Guy", but such was my respect for you that I could not. We would both laugh! I was in the nursery when both Kristen and Michael were born...remembering how proud you were! You will be forever in my heart.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Mr. Ketch's family. He was a teacher who never stopped teaching. He practiced what he preached in class, through his teaching and involvement in the community. He pushed us all to do our best and somehow he saw the best in us when we did not. He treated us with respect and his challenge to become responsible adults stayed with me throughout the years after graduation. He was the best!

Guy was everything a teacher should be. Open minded and sincerely interested in helping all his students. I remember him telling us about marching with Dr. King, a message we weren't getting anywhere else at that time. Teenagers who knew everything could be persuaded that there might be another way of looking at an issue. He meant a lot to so many. Legacy for his family to be proud of.

So sorry to hear of Guy's passing. Guy always went out of his way to say hello when he saw you. He was a great teacher and will be missed by many. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.

In 8th grade a long, long time ago Mr. Ketch sparked an interest in history for me that has only grown. It was always fun visiting with him at class reunions. Great teacher. Wonderful man. He will be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.
