John Lewandowski Obituary

John C. Lewandowski, 95, formerly of West Wyomissing, passed away on Friday, July 15, 2022, in the care of Reading Hospital. He was the widower of Stella A. (DiPersio), who passed away in 2003. Born in Reading to the late Stanley and Lottie (Zalegowski) Lewandowski, John attended Reading High School where “Rebound Johnny” played on the varsity basketball team. John left high school to serve his country during World War II. John served in the Battle of the Bulge and was one of many soldiers who suffered from frozen feet, causing him to lose a leg. After his honorable discharge, he attended night school to graduate with his high school diploma in 1954. Previously he worked at the Textile Machine Works, first as a guard and later as a machine operator, and later as a Police Officer in Spring Township. He retired from Met Ed in 1990 after 23 ½ years, last working as a Customer Representative. He also had many part-time gigs; his favorite part time job was with Hindin’s Bakery. John was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, West Reading. He served on the Spring Township Planning Commission. His love of basketball continued throughout his life, and he played at East Ends Athletic Association and the Franklin Athletic Club for many years. Left to treasure John’s memory is his daughter, Donna M. Wade Bird of West Wyomissing; his granddaughters, Pam (Dave) Peppers, Andrea Bird, Charlene Smith, Alecia (Chad) Eberly, and Justi (Tom) Holowko. John is also survived by his much beloved great grandchildren, Aiden, Ella, Abagail, Roland, Jacob, Savannah, Makenzie, Nora, and Thomas. He was predeceased by his wife, Stella, and their daughter, Rita M. Schreinert. In lieu of flowers, contributions in John’s memory may be offered to the Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601, or to the American Heart Association, PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 21, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 740 Cherry St, West Reading, with burial to follow at Gethsemane Cemetery. Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. and again Thursday from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. at the Edward J. Kuhn Funeral Home, Inc, 739 Penn Ave, West Reading.
