John E. Loeper John E. Loeper, 86, formerly of Reading and lately of Country Meadows, passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2021 in the care of Reading Hospital. He was known as “Jack” to his family and “Chick” to his friends. John was the loving husband of 65 years to Margaret Jean (Henry) Loeper. Born in Reading, John was a son of the late Philip W. and Margaret M. (Mayer) Loeper. A life-long member of St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church, John was born and raised in the parish. After leaving the service, John worked for a time as a radiographer at American Chain and Cable and Pennsylvania Steel, but he was best known for his service as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service in Reading and Sinking Spring. A lover of America’s pastime, John coached baseball for the Rising Sun Athletic Association and served as an assistant coach for Central Catholic. He was also a member of the Central Catholic Booster Club. John’s memory will be forever cherished by his wife, Jeanie, his children: Kathleen A., wife of Jonathan F. Loeper; and Penelope G. Loeper; his great granddaughter, Stella Custis; and his brothers: Philip T., husband of Helen Loeper, of Albuquerque, NM; and Thomas E., husband of Margaret Loeper, of Richmond, VA. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his great grandson Henry Custis and his siblings Robert P. Loeper, Carl J. Loeper, Virginia M. Arentz, Paul W. Loeper, Jeanette A. Rubright, and Elizabeth L. McDonald. I got to know John after my playing days at CCHS. He always greeted me with a smile and a pat me on my shoulders. He loved being a booster for CCHS. I will miss stopping by his home with my children; he always gave them lollipop, to put a smile on their faces. He was always good to me and my children and for that he will truly be missed. Condolences from my family to yours.

My sincerest condolences to Jean, Kathy, Steve & John & all the Loeper family on the passing of your beloved Jack. I have nothing but fond memories of him and looked up to him, growing up two doors away on Mulberry Street in the 1960's. He would play catch with me and talk baseball, something my father wasn't as inclined to do and always, always had a winning smile. Grounded in his service to the church, he was a role model to me. He and Jean are two adults I miss most from my childhood and just the thought of them brings a smile to my face. Take strength in our faith and I hope to see you on Saturday.
