Lenhartsville, passed away on Monday, September 24, 2018, in St. Luke's Hospice House, Bethlehem. John suffered a sudden cardiac incident over a week ago that occurred while he was doing what he loved to do - exercising.
He was the loving husband of 44 years of Doreen M. (Bohling) Tobin, who he married on September 21, 1974.
Born in Bryan, Ohio, John was a son of the late C. Russell and Harriet E. (Carver) Tobin.
He was a member of St. Barnabas' Episcopal Church, Kutztown, where he served as the junior warden. He and his wife, Doreen, formerly attended St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Kutztown, where John was active on the church choir.
He was a graduate of Paul D. Schreiber Senior High School, Port Washington, N.Y.; St. Lawrence University, Canton, N.Y., where he received a bachelor's degree in
music; The University of Minnesota Duluth, Duluth, Minn., where he received a second bachelor's degree in math; and finally, Lehigh University, Bethlehem, where he received a master's degree in computer science. John worked as a software engineer for many years, last working at East Stroudsburg University until his death. He also worked in the same capacity at I.B.M. and Lucent Technologies.
John was an avid and accomplished juggler. He was a member of the International Jugglers Association and The Reading Jugglers Club. He also loved singing and enjoyed all kinds of music, especially barbershop. He sang with a barbershop group in Allentown and was also a member of The Society of Barbershop Singers. John had a knack for growing things and even had his own personal orchard. Playing soccer in the Allentown and Reading area was also a favorite pastime of John's.
Above all, John was a proud father and grandfather. He supported his daughters' activities and was their number one fan. He was their assistant soccer coach for several years, and even participated in his daughters' dance
performance of The Nutcracker Ballet. Tobi was quite the character and will be sorely missed by his family and many friends.
Survivors: In addition to his wife, Doreen, John is survived by his three children: Jesse K. Tobin, wife of Matthew Sicher, Lenhartsville, Sasha E. Tobin, Phoenix, Ariz., and Deni A. Tobin, West Chester; and his two beloved grandchildren, Asa and Elijah Sicher. He is also survived by a brother, C. Lewis Tobin, Nome, Alaska; six nieces; and several cousins.
Services: A memorial service to celebrate Tobi's life will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at 4:00 p.m. in Ludwick Funeral Homes Inc., with his Reverend, Mother Laura Howell, officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation on Saturday afternoon from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the funeral home. Please support John's bright
personality by wearing a token of yellow (his favorite)!
Contributions: In lieu of flowers, the family requests
contributions be made in John's memory to the John "Tobi" Tobin Memorial Scholarship, through the ESU Foundation at East Stroudsburg University, East Stroudsburg, Pa., or to St. Barnabas' Episcopal Church, 234 E. Main St., Kutztown, PA 19530.
