He was the husband of the late Helen Wernig, who passed away Feb. 23, 2002.
Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Joseph and Ida Wernig.
He was a member of Ss. Cyril and Methodious Catholic Church.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, and served in the D-Day invasion of Normandy, France, on June 6, 1944. He was honorably discharged from his service.
Wernig is survived by his loving family, a son, John L. Jr., husband of Donna, Titusville, Fla.; and a daughter, Judy D., wife of Robert Vogel, Myerstown.
Other survivors include a brother-in-law, Lloyd Bitting; and two sisters-in-law, Mary Brubaker and Mary Rusnak.
There are also two grandsons, Jeremy Wernig, N.C.; and Rob Vogel, Reading; and two granddaughters, Lisa Duffy, Hanover; and Susan J. (Vogel) Padovani, wife of Neal, Reading; and six great-grandchildren: Lauren C. and Michael R. Duffy, Gabriella and Brianna Padovani, and Jarred and Breelle Vogel; and extended family, neighbors and many friends.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Gethsemane Cemetery, 3139 Kutztown Road, Reading. Burial will follow.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Olivet Boys and Girls Club, Unit 677, Clinton St., Reading, PA 19601.
